IOL Cole Hutson
This was my favorite player from the 2022 OL haul. Cole Hutson’s high school film is just him flipping sorry little kids on their necks. It’s fabulous. No, really, check it out. He was the only early enrollee of the OL, so word is he’s getting a chance to start right away. I believe he is up to that task, and the coaches seem to as well. So, what is his background, how does he win, and where will football take Cole Hutson?
High School and Recruiting
Hutson attended Frisco High School in Frisco, TX. He was rated as the 362nd player overall in his class. As well as the 13th IOL and the 48th player in Texas. When watching his tape I’m left baffled on how he was rated so lowly. He was playing 5A in Texas and just massacring kids left and right. I’m not saying he should have been a five star, but top 300 at the least. His main recruiter was, obviously, Coach Kyle Flood. He chose Texas over offers from Alabama, Texas A&M, OU, Penn St, and many others.
On Field Skills
As I’ve said multiple times already, Hutson just obliterates people. Especially in the run game when he can get to the second level. If Hutson gets a full head of steam, and you are in front of him, goodnight. This makes Hutson super lethal on pulls, as he delivers some devastating kick out blocks. He proved to have an elite mean streak in high school, and put it on display enough in spring camp to where the coaches trust him to play early. He has the size and the feet to make an early impact, and I expect him to do just that.
Outlook for Texas in 2022
Cole Hutson has a real chance to make a huge impact on the 2022 season. As I’ve stated, he’s being given a chance to start from day one. If he does end up winning the job, he doesn’t even have to be good to be an upgrade over last season. Just an average player would be a substantial upgrade over what was put out there in 2021. If he shows to have an average freshman season, through growth and experience he could become a great player. Of the seven freshmen OL brought onto campus this year, Hutson seems to be in the pole position to win a starting job from day one, and will likely be one of the two or three that run out with the first group come week one.
Career Outlook
If the reports about Hutson come to fruition, he will find himself in the NFL one day. It’s not easy for an 18 year old kid to come in, especially in the trenches, and be looked at as the best possible option on a power-5 team. I have high hopes for Cole. He’s already NFL size, and three years in a college conditioning program will have him even more beefed up and ready. He has the nastiness and the nimbleness to be elite on the college level. I don’t know if he’ll grow into a first round player, but a draftable player? For sure.
