WR Brenen Thompson
Brenen Thompson was one of my favorite players from the 2021 high school class. His top end speed is absurd, and I am glad it’s on my favorite team. Coach Sark continues to show us that he cares for speed more than size at the skill positions, and Thompson is no different. He is small, but he can fly. So, what does 2022 have prepared for the speedy freshman?
High School and Recruiting:
Thompson was rated as the number 20 WR in the 2022 class, and the number 131 player overall. He was a killer on the track, winning the 3A 200m state title with a 21.27. He also has a 10.18 100m time on his record. The kid can flat out fly. He played his high school ball at Spearman High School, in Spearman, TX. He committed to Texas over offers from Alabama, Texas A&M, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, OU, and many others.
On Field Skills:
As I referenced in the beginning, Brenen Thompson is a real life speedster. Capable of turning any touch into a 60 yard score. Thompson was the only WR in the ‘22 high school class, potentially allowing him an early path to the field. His speed cannot be understated, and if anything can get you on the field at a skill position early, it’s elite speed. I can only imagine a NASCAR package of Thompson, Keilan Robinson, Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington, and Jahleel Billingsley all on the field together. That is elite speed at every spot on the field, good luck covering them all.
Outlook for Texas in 2022:
As I said, I expect there to be some packages that Thompson is involved in as a freshman. He is slight, listed at 5’11” 162. However, a listing of 6’1” 160 didn’t stop freshman Xavier Worthy from dominating. Thompson is capable of making big things happen out of nothing, and it should be expected to see that in spurts this season. He won’t be a huge factor in the offense, but will explode for a big play once every couple games.
Career Outlook:
This kid has the tools to be an elite football player for a long time. Speed like this usually doesn’t end up on a football field, but at the Olympic trials. He will be a chess piece for Sarkisian to use over the next three or four years. A weapon above all other weapons to pull out in times of big need. He will 100% get looks from the NFL in a few years. Hopefully he can bulk up into the 180 pound range, while still keeping his all-world explosiveness. If he can do that, you better learn and remember the name Brenen Thompson, cause you’ll be hearing it for a long while.
