Andrej Karic: Does His Role Change Due to Angilau’s Injury?

    OT Andrej Karic

Andrej Karic is a redshirt sophomore with 14 games of experience for the Longhorns. He played in 11 games in 2021, including one start at RT against Oklahoma. Karic has played both tackle spots at times throughout his career. He earned All-B12 Academic First-Team honors in 2021.

    High School and Recruiting

Karic played football at Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake, TX. There he was teammates with now Texas teammate Quinn Ewers. He was ranked as the 364th player in the nation by the 247Sports composite and the number 26 tackle. Karic was recruited by former Texas coaches Herb Hand and Tim Beck. He was projected as a power-5 starter, and compared to former Texas offensive lineman Connor Williams as a senior. Karic was selected to play in the Under Armor All-American game in 2020. He committed to Texas over offers from Auburn, Baylor, USC, Michigan, Ole Miss, and Florida State amongst others.

    On Field Skills

There were some questions out of high school as to whether or not Karic would be able to stick on the outside at tackle. His lack of length is the leading reason for that, yet two Texas coaching staffs have kept him there. Andrej Karic doesn’t possess the size that the Sark OL recruits have, but he has a nasty streak that is next to none. Karic wants to take heads off and put holes through chests on every snap. That nastiness will keep him in playing time discussions the entire time he’s on campus, regardless of his size. However, with being smaller he will have to be more technical along with his mean streak to win consistently.

    Outlook for Texas in 2022

Karic is intriguing coming into the 2022 season. He has a chance to establish himself at one of the tackle spots, and now with an injury to Junior Angilau, perhaps he could ruffle some things up on the interior. Being that Karic has in game experience, I expect to see him early in the season. If he ends up the day one starter at right tackle, I wouldn’t be surprised. With Kelvin Banks, Cam Williams, and Christian Jones all also vying for starting tackle spots, competition is fierce. If Karic wants to start he will have to be on top of his game every single day.

    Career Outlook

It is Hard to judge where Karic’s career is going to take him because he hasn’t played a whole lot at Texas. With just two starts and 14 total games he doesn’t have enough film to make a determination on his playing future. If he’s able to max out his frame by adding maybe 10 pounds, he could slide inside which I believe would help his football future. If his length was a cause for question in high school, it’s obviously much worse for the NFL. Hopefully Karic hits his peak potential. The more depth on the OL, the better.
