The NFL has already gone through one of the craziest coaching carousels we can remember in recent history, and just like that it is just about over. Teams have made very quick work in finding their new leaders and we are now down to just two teams left looking for a head coach.
NFL, Atlanta Falcons Get Their Guy
It was reported earlier today that Raheem Morris will be the new head coach for the Atlanta Falcons in 2024. He replaces Arthur Smith with a team that has many young stars. What is crazy though, is that the Falcons interviewed both Mike Vrabel and Bill Belichick and decided to go with Morris who is much less proven. Now that Vrabel and Belichick missed the Falcons, they may not be getting jobs come next season.
For the Falcons, this is not as aggressive of a signing as signing as we thought Arthur Blank would make, but we will have to wait and see how Morris does and if they can get a quarterback for next season. The Falcons were the 6th of 8 teams to get their coach but now they can properly start focusing on the off season and getting more pieces to compete in their division.
Los Angeles Chargers Get Jim Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh has now been confirmed to be the next head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers after winning a national title with Michigan. This is huge news for Justin Herbert and the Chargers as they now have a proper winning coach who is sure to bring culture and toughness to this team.
While bringing Harbaugh is just the first step for this Chargers team that went 5-12 this past season, Harbaugh was thought to be the best candidate available even with guys like Belichick and Vrabel available. Now the best candidate goes to the team that has the most weapons and best quarterback so that was a real match made in heaven. We will see how quickly Harbaugh can turn the franchise around and get them deep into the post season where they haven’t been in decades.
The New England Patriots Hire From Within
The New England Patriots brought in their guy Jerod Mayo from within the organization and they are already ready to look at the draft and free agency to bring in more talent as their new coach Mayo has said. They are now in a very new era after Belichick was there for 24 years.
Now, It looks like the Patriots are going their own way while Belichick may not get a job altogether. Mayo has been very vocal about how he is different than Bill and how is going to bring in tons of talent. He also hinted to the Patriots drafting a quarterback so it will be a very different team in New England next year.
Rest Of The Signings
The other signings that have already taken place are the Las Vegas Raiders who listened to their locker room and brought back Antonio Pierce who did amazing things as the interim coach this past season. Pierce got the backing of his locker room as players even threatened to ask for a trade if the Raiders did not bring him back. The fact that they did means they should build on the defensive success they got this past season and if they can figure out the quarterback they can be a real contender.
The Tennessee Titans are moving off of Mike Vrabel and they have now surprisingly hired Bran Callahan to replace Vrabel for the Titans. It will be hard for them to do well as they are now in a full rebuild but we will see next season if Callahan can turn it around.
The Carolina Panthers also got their guy in Dave Canales and that job was not one of the most appetizing to many coaching candidates. Canales is young and can maybe be the push the Panthers need to move up. The good thing is, is that they can only go up from being the worst team in the NFL.
That leaves just the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks jobs left and they both are seemingly just about to lock those in. It would be shocking if both Belichick and Vrabel cannot get a job when there was so many open. With Ben Johnson and Dan Quin looking like the favorites to land those jobs, all of the coaching openings will come to a close.
