The New England Patriots have a lot do this off season after moving off of legend Bill Belichick after 24 seasons and going with Jerod Mayo at head coach. After going 4-13, the worst record in more than two decades for the team, the Patriots made a change at head coach and now they have fill out the rest of the coaching staff. They will have the 3rd overall pick in the draft, and will look to make a full rebuild following their worst year in decades.
They are looking for both a new offensive and defensive coordinator, and now there have been reports about a strong candidate emerging for Mayo and the Pats to get the defensive coordinator position. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington is favored to land the job. Covington has held that role as the defensive line coach for four seasons and now should be upgraded to the DC.
He has helped develop players like Christian Barmore and Deatrich Wise, in addition to having star Matthew Judon play his best football with is time in New England.
The New England Patriots Have Strong Candidate For DC In DeMarcus Covington
It is almost a sure thing now for Covington to take over the defense under Jerod Mayo as they have built a great connection over the last half decade. Breer was quoted about the strong candidate saying:
“The first domino to fall [for the Patriots] could be DeMarcus Covington landing the defensive coordinator job,” Breer said on Tuesday.
According to Breer, the relationship that Mayo and Covington have could be the key factor in signing DeMarcus to be the new defensive coordinator. He has proven that he can get the defensive line right as the Patriots have been unbelievable the past few season in their rush defense, being the number 2 overall in that category this year.
Hiring Covington would also keep in line with what New England has been doing by bringing in talent from within the organization and building from within.
Jerod Mayo Still Has A Ton Of Work To Do
Mayo will have a lot of work to do this off season to get this team back on track, and this should be the first domino to fall. They will also need to look for a new offensive coordinator as Bill O’Brian is out for them and going back to college football. Once they have the coaching staff set they will have a huge draft and free agency this year to bring in more talent.
Mayo was quoted about making some big moves including drafting a quarterback with the third overall pick, and getting more talent in free agency saying:
“We’re bringing in talent 1,000 percent,” Mayo said Monday on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show. “We have a lot of cap space — and cash. We’re ready to burn some cash!”
It is clear now that there is a new era in New England, and Mayo is already making a bunch of moves to get this team back to being competitive next year. DeMarcus Covington should be the first big move to go down as their is not any real interest in anyone else.
