The Atlanta Falcons were one of the top landing spots for the coaching candidates and after interviewing 14 different people, they have announced their new head coach. The Falcons have hired Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris to be the new coach for the team, per Adam Schefter.
He will be replacing Arthur Smith and taking over a young and talented roster. This will be interesting as he was the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009-11 as well as the interim coach for the Atlanta Falcons during the 2020 season as part of Dan Quinn’s staff before they hired Smith.
As a coach, Raheem Morris has won two Super Bowls but has a 21-38 record as a head coach. This will be intriguing to see how he does in his second stint with the team. H was part of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-2020, coaching on both sides of the ball before leaving to become the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams.
Can the Atlanta Falcons win the NFC South next season with Raheem Morris as coach?
This Atlanta Falcons team has a lot of intriguing pieces as they are a quarterback away from being a serious contender in the NFC South. The Falcons finished last season 26th in scoring (18.9 ppg) and 18th in scoring defense (21.9 ppg). This team should be able to step up and improve with one of the top defensive minds in football.
This team has some impactful defensive pieces that are free agents such as cornerback Jeff Okudah, defensive end Calais Campbell and linebacker Bud Dupree. However, this team has one of the best cornerbacks in the game in A.J. Terrell and some solid players. If they can fix the offense by getting a good quarterback, they will be in the running for the division and a home playoff game.
They are going to have to compete with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but there is no dominating team in the division as it currently stands. With the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, this could be a team with a bright future as the offense has a lot of young talent littered throughout the roster.
