The Carolina Panthers are in the market for a new head coach. This comes after going 2-15 this past season with two different head coaches. Despite not having the most resources to work with, it appears that the Panthers have found the next man they want to run with.
Carolina Panthers Reportedly Hiring Dave Canales
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Carolina Panthers are reportedly closing in on a deal to hire Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales. He has only held the offensive coordinator position for one season. Yet, the Panthers seem to be impressed enough with the job he has done with Tampa Bay to move forward.
Dave Canales’ Qualifications
Despite only being an offensive coordinator for one season, Canales does have plenty of experience in the NFL. He has been coaching around the league since 2010. Canales held several different coaching positions with the Seattle Seahawks from 2010-2022. This includes him being the wide receivers coach for the Super Bowl XLVIII championship team.
However, he was offered a promotion to the offensive coordinator position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. Canales flourished there with QB Baker Mayfield. Now, he looks like he will continue his rise to a head coach position.
Carolina Panthers Moving Forward
The Carolina Panthers may have found their head coach, but they still have a lot of work to do. It does not help that they traded their top overall pick in this upcoming draft last season. Now, they have to watch the Chicago Bears either look for a franchise quarterback with that pick or trade it for yet another big haul. The Panthers will also hope that Canales can develop QB Bryce Young after a disappointing rookie season.
