The New York Jets are making headlines for the wrong reasons lately. One of those headlines involves star LB Haason Reddick. A few days ago, it was revealed that Reddick would be holding out at the start of the Jets’ training camp.
As a result, this has forced the Jets to take drastic action. They have changed Reddick’s roster status due to his holdout.
New York Jets Place Haason Reddick on Reserve List
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the New York Jets are placing LB Haason Reddick on their reserve/did not report list. This comes after it was revealed that Reddick would be holding out at the beginning of training camp in hopes of getting a new contract.
Holding out could be a costly endeavor for Reddick if he fails to get a new deal from the Jets. This is because he will be fined $50,000 for each day of training camp he misses. Considering there are still six weeks in between now and the start of the regular season, these fines can add up as a veteran.
What Does This Mean?
So, what does being placed on the reserve/did not report list mean? For starters, it is the Jets publicly acknowledging that Reddick has failed to show up with the team but did not retire. It accounts for players like Reddick who choose to hold out during training camp.
If this holdout somehow lasts until the regular season, placing Reddick on this list benefits the Jets in two ways. First, he would not be counted as a member of the active roster, which would open up an extra spot for the Jets.
Second, Reddick’s salary does not count against the Jets’ salary cap while he is on this list. So, if this holdout goes into the regular season, it could potentially free up nearly $15 million for the Jets to sign another player.
New York Jets Moving Forward
For now, the New York Jets have to go on with business as usual with the players they have at training camp. However, the last thing this team needs is another distraction. This is especially the case when Aaron Rodgers still has to answer questions about why he skipped the Jets’ mandatory minicamp last month. Without a productive veteran linebacker like Reddick on defense, it could make it tougher for the Jets to improve upon last season’s disappointing results.
