The New York Jets announced they signed a rookie quarterback on Thursday morning. The move came a few days after the team announced they’d be without their fifth-round pick to start training camp.
The New York Jets placed Jordan Travis on the NFI list
Per a statement by the Jets on Tuesday, the team placed rookie quarterback Jordan Travis on the Non-football injury list in relation to an injury that occurred during the college football season last fall:
“A fifth-round pick (No. 171 overall) out of Florida State, Travis reportedly fractured and dislocated his left ankle last November in a game against North Alabama. Up to that point, Travis (6-1, 200) had completed 63.9% of his passes with 20 TDs and 2 INTs while leading the ‘Noles to an 11-0 mark.
The NFI designation for Travis means he is unable to practice due to conditions unrelated to football or an injury occurred away from the team’s facility. If Travis remains on the NFI list at final cutdowns, he can be placed on the reserve non-football injury or reserve non-football illness list and not count towards the 53-man roster limit. Remaining on the NFI list would mean a player would miss a minimum of four games.”
The Jets signed Ben Bryant
Following Travis’ designations, the Jets had three quarterbacks on their roster for training camp. Per a statement by the Jets, the team signed former Northwestern quarterback Ben Bryant:
Bryant (6-3, 220), who played collegiately at Cincinnati (2018-2020, 2022), Eastern Michigan (2021) and Northwestern (2023), completed 64.3% of his passes over 49 appearances while compiling 50 TDs and 23 INTs. Bryant becomes the fourth QB on the training camp roster, joining Aaron Rodgers, Tyrod Taylor and rookie Andrew Peasley.
Bryant spent time with the New York Giants during OTAs this spring.
Backup QBs were a problem for the New York Jets last season
The Jets quarterback room was a disaster last year. Following Aaron Rodgers’s Achilles injury, Tim Boyle and Zach Wilson struggled to succeed in Nathaniel Hackett’s offense. Tyrod Taylor was a productive backup for the New York Giants last season and should be a quality backup for the Jets this year.
However, the Jets need competition for the QB3 job and, frankly, need to find a long-term solution at the QB2 position. It looks like Travis has a while to go before he can assume either of those jobs. Bryant will have a chance to grab the QB3 job this preseason.
