The Washington Commanders are picking second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, and while they have Sam Howell at quarterback, the smart thing to do for the team is bring in a young and talented QB who could very well compete for a starting spot.
Now the issue for the Commanders is that they have a couple of QB options at no. 2. Even though Caleb Williams is likely to get picked first overall, Washington can still choose between LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye.
If you ask renowned NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., however, the choice should be Daniels. While Maye is equally talented, his uncharacteristic performance late in the season gave the LSU signal-caller the edge. Not to mention that Daniels appears to be a better fit when considering the weapons that the Commanders already have.
“The reigning Heisman Trophy winner improved so much in 2023, throwing 40 touchdown passes to just four interceptions while going up against a tough SEC schedule. … The bottom line is it’s tight between Daniels and Maye on my board, but Daniels would be a tremendous fit for a Washington roster that has some young playmakers on offense,” Kiper shared, via ESPN.
“Maye’s inconsistency at the end of the season is enough for me to put Daniels at No. 2. The reality, though, is the Commanders just hired their new general manager and still don’t have a coach, so there’s a lot to figure out about which direction they go.”
Considering how Jayden Daniels elevated his game throughout the past season, it only makes sense for the Washington Commanders to pick him over Drake Maye. His athleticism is also a big plus that gives him a ton of advantage, because it’s something that could give him an edge against other quarterbacks in the pro scene.
Of course it remains to be seen what the Commanders will do. As Kiper mentioned, their uncertainty in the front office makes it hard to predict what actions they’ll take.
For now, fans can only be patient and wait what the top brass will do.
Why the Washington Commanders Should Pick Jayden Daniels
The biggest concern about Jayden Daniels is his skinny frame, but that’s something he can improve especially when he goes pro where there is better focus on strength, conditioning and overall health.
Daniels’ physical gifts makes him an ideal quarterback with incredible ceiling. He has the speed and burst to dominate on the field, not to mention his amazing pocket management. He could very well become an intriguing dual-threat QB in the NFL.
Pair it up with his deep-ball accuracy and Daniels has all the makings of a franchise quarterback.
Throughout his five-year collegiate career, Daniels has recorded a total of 12,750 passing yards and 89 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 3304 yards and 10 TDs on the ground.
With that body of work, the Washington Commanders would get a battle-tested and pro-ready QB.
