With the league year one day away, the San Francisco 49ers have restructured Fred Warner’s contract. This was in order for the team to be in compliance with the cap space per league rules. Warner was expected to have a large cap hit this year, and instead gave the team room to maneuver. Here is a look at the way the team restructured Fred Warner’s contract.

    49ers Restructure Fred Warner’s Contract

It was reported by Field Yates on Twitter that the 49ers restructured Fred Warner’s contract in order to create $9.5 million in cap space. Warner was set to have an $18.5 million cap hit this year, according to David Lombardi, but converted the base salary into a signing bonus. This is how it lowered from $18.5 million to around $9 million.

The team was low in cap space due to the information regarding Darnold’s contract and with re-signing Jake Brendel. Now the team will be in compliance with the cap space, and have room to maneuver with many needed spots to fill. The 49ers could still use more depth at the cornerback and defensive end positions, mainly due to losing multiple defensive players in free agency.

The 49ers could use more help at the cornerback position and on the defensive line, specifically another edge rusher. This was a move that was expected, but still a great thing for the 49ers. The new league year officially begins tomorrow at 4 pm Eastern.
