The Seattle Seahawks have been busy signing contracts recently – especially the one-day kind. Both K.J. Wright and J.R. Sweezy retired this week with the Seattle Seahawks, returning home after playing for other teams. Right before these ceremonial contracts, we saw RB Chris Carson get released in result of retiring with a lingering neck injury.
The end of an era – Another LOB member out
K.J. Wright began his career in Seattle in 2011, and 11 seasons later he is hanging up his cleats there as well. Wright was only willing to do a 12th season if he was with the 12th man. The Seattle Seahawks are rebuilding with an eye on new 20-something’s, though, and the 33-year-old was not invited back to play this season.
Although the Legion of Boom started as Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, and Earl Thomas, and more subtly the cornerback Brandon Browner, later replaced by Bryon Maxwell, the term was sometimes later used for the entire defense, including K.J. Wright. Every member of the LOB has now left the team, and most have left the NFL.
Wright is in good company:
J.R. Sweezy retired Friday with the second one-day contract of the week. He was drafted in the legendary 2012 draft, and helped lead the team to a Super bowl win in 2014.
He was quoted saying “I feel like I’m at home” in his 2nd stint on the team in 2018. He’s retired now, at home.
The roster looks a lot different this year:
We are losing many greats this year.
Russell Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos, where he feels he is joining a team with a chance. No one can say Russ is crying over spilled milk.
Also, Bobby Wagner, the final LOB member to play with the Hawks, has joined the Rams Defense filled with all-pro and pro-bowl players. He deserves it after finding out he was traded – but not by his own team!
Wearing green and blue, or not, all of these players are Seattle Seahawks forever.
It’s a good look for the team that so many players want to come back home at the end of their careers.
