The Colorado football program opened itself to around-the-clock scrutiny and criticism after the Deion Sanders hiring last offseason. Sanders, a former NFL megastar turned college football head coach, has shined in his post-playing career, owning splendid records at Jackson State before signing on to lead the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023. However, a polarizing figure since his days at Florida State in the mid-80s, Sanders has always drawn heavy media attention for his persona and ability to cultivate headlines with his media presence.

Colorado is in the process of undergoing their second straight transfer portal-heavy roster reconstruction after a staggering 42 players left the program this offseason. Although they have done an admirable job retooling, a recent report suggests that a post-spring game activity was the reason for some of their latest departures.

According to Athlon Sports Nation and popular college football Twitter account RedditCFB, Coach Deion Sanders, in a move that sparked controversy, insisted on his son Shedeur Sanders’ musical performance following the team’s spring game two months ago be mandatory. The younger Sanders, who, like his father, is trying his hand at the rap game, opened for legendary musician Lil Wayne’s concert following last April’s spring game at the CU Events Center. Athlon Sports Nation and RedditCFB claimed through a player source that coach Prime made the event mandatory; a decision met with strong opposition from certain players.

A source claims that Deion Sanders made a Lil Wayne concert that his son Shedeur opened for mandatory for all players under threat of being removed from the team, and that this motivated multiple players to transfer out. https://t.co/obPSyjYat9 pic.twitter.com/EmElWezWAr

“The Wayne concert was the final straw for a few players who hit the transfer portal,” a source said per Athlon Sports Nation. “When Coach Prime told us we all had to be there to support Shedeur as a rapper, they were not happy at all. To be honest, it was nothing but a huge distraction, and Daddy Ball was being played.”

Shedeur Sanders performed his single “Perfect Timing” before the Buffaloes faithful. Meanwhile, Coach Sanders started his rap career in 1994 with his debut album Prime Time.

Although Colorado football lost six straight games to end the year and finished with a measly 4-8 record, it was a vast improvement from their one-win campaign the year prior. Since 2016, Colorado has failed to finish the year ranked, but the Deion Sanders-led squad showed flashes of brilliance last year, including a massive road win over the then-ranked TCU Horned Frogs to open the year. The expectation is for the Buffaloes to take another step forward in 2024, especially with their current roster construction.

Returning to lead the offense are quarterback Shedeur Sanders and receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter. Sanders threw for 3,230 and 27 touchdowns last year against only three interceptions. Meanwhile, Hunter posted a spectacular 57-reception, 30-tackle season while earning All-American honors. Colorado also welcomes a projected 12 new starters, 11 of which came via the transfer portal.
