While college football bid farewell to USC standout Caleb Williams, UNC’s Drake Maye, and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels in the 2023 NFL draft, the sports quarterback lineup remains robust. Colorado football’s Shedeur Sanders, alongside Carson Beck, Quinn Ewers, Dillon Gabriel, and Jalen Milroe, among others, will lead the pack of college passers next season. The sport of college football is in a prime position, consistently producing top-tier talent, particularly at the quarterback position. On Friday, former Alabama Crimson Tide signal-caller Greg McElroy, now with ESPN, unveiled his top ten QBs in college football, with Colorado Buffaloes superstar Shedeur Sanders earning high praise.
Colorado Football QB Shedeur Sanders: Earns High Mark from ESPN Analyst
Despite Colorado football’s recent struggles, there’s a glimmer of hope in the form of quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The son of head coach Deion Sanders, Shedeur had an impressive season, throwing for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns against three interceptions. Despite being one of the country’s most sacked quarterbacks, he added four scores via the ground.

Sanders earned high praises from a one-time BCS Championship on Friday, with two-year Alabama Crimson Tide starting quarterback turned ESPN commentator Greg McElroy placing Sanders third among his top college passers. Sanders trails only Georgia’s Carson Beck and Texas’ Quinn Ewers on McElroy’s list. Beck threw for 3,941 and 24 touchdowns against six picks. Meanwhile, Ewers led the Texas Longhorns to the College Football Playoff while posting one of the country’s best quarterback efficiency ratings.
Sanders: Ranks Higher Than Dillon Gabriel, Noah Fifita
ESPN’s Greg McElroy praised Colorado football’s Shedeur Sanders, placing him third on his list of top ten quarterbacks. Sanders had an uber-efficient first year in Boulder, but his placement on McElroy’s list remains a head-scratcher. Directly behind Sanders is former Oklahoma passer and current Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel. The transfer threw for 3,660 yards and 30 passing touchdowns for a double-digit winning Sooner team last year, all higher marks than Sanders. Meanwhile, among those also on McElroy’s list, Alabama QB Jalen Milroe, and current Miami Hurricanes gunslinger Cameron Ward had more total touchdowns than Sanders last year with substantially more team success.
Also on the media personality’s rankings are Kansas’ Jalon Daniels, Arizona’s Noah Fifita, Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, and Utah’s Cam Rising. The trio of Fifita, Dart, and Daniels all posted a higher quarterback effectiveness rating than Colorado football passer Shedeur Sanders in 2023. Additionally, Rising, who missed last year with an injury, passed for 46 touchdowns against 13 picks from 2021 to 2022.
