The Oklahoma football program faces a tall task next year as they transition to the hyper-competitive SEC after nearly a century in the Big 12 (also known as the Big 8 and Big 7). This move will test their abilities and present new challenges, especially with a first-year starting quarterback. However, on Wednesday, reports surfaced of an arrest involving one of their top receivers, which could impact the team’s offense next fall.
Per multiple sources, reports have emerged that Deion Burks, one of the OU’s best wide receivers this offseason and a former Purdue Boilermakers star, was arrested in early June. Burks became the latest football player to run into legal trouble. Kansas City Chiefs superstar Rashee Rice stole headlines earlier this year for a multi-car collision resulting in his eventual arrest.
Deion Burks Arrest Details
On Wednesday, news broke of an early June arrest of Oklahoma football wideout Deion Burks. The Michigan native is facing misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, speeding and transporting an open container of alcohol. Burks was booked into the Cleveland County Jail after testing above the legal limit for alcohol.

In the early hours of June 1, law enforcement pulled over Burks after the wideout changed lanes without signaling and ultimately achieved a speed nearly 25 miles over the speed limit. According to the affidavit, Burks claimed to have ingested two shots of hard liquor and was “just trying to get home.”
Fellow Oklahoma Sooner Arrested
The news of Deion Burks’ arrest came just hours after teammate and cornerback Makari Vickers got arrested by the OU Police Department and booked into Cleveland County Jail. Vickers posted eight tackles as an underclassman last year and, per Ourlads, sits third on the team’s depth chart. The details of the defensive back arrest remain under lock and key, with a spokesman from the university telling SI, “We are aware of the matter, and it is being addressed internally.”
Oklahoma Football: Expecting Big Year From Burks
Unlike corner Makari Vickers, the Oklahoma football program has massive expectations for wide receiver Deion Burks next fall. However, if Oklahoma suspends him post-arrest, his impact could take a substantial hit. Burks transferred to Oklahoma this offseason after three seasons with the Purdue Boilermakers. He posted career numbers last year, tallying 47 receptions, 629 yards, and seven touchdowns. His best game came in the season opener against Fresno State, registering four receptions for 152 yards and two scores.
Burks had become a favorite of quarterback Jackson Arnold this offseason, with the gunslinger linking up with the Purdue transfer for a touchdown during the team’s annual spring game. Burks, alongside fellow pass-catchers Jalil Farooq, Nic Anderson, and Andrel Anthony, remain the top wide receivers heading into next year, their first in the SEC.
