Baker Mayfield’s proclivity for play-action passes is a perfect fit for the Panthers’ offensive strengths. However, there’s a lot of screwy mechanics in his tape that needs to be corrected in order to hone his accuracy and limit turnovers. After this ringer of an offseason, new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo is implementing a system and will look to make Mayfield as comfortable as possible. That starts with featuring the play-action.  Strength: Play-action specialist “Play action. That’s when Baker Mayfield is at his best,” Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner said on QBConfidential.  When Kevin Stefanski took over in 2020, the…

The Carolina Panthers acquired Baker Mayfield from the Cleveland Browns today in exchange for a conditional fifth round pick in 2024. The former No. 1 overall pick in the draft will compete with Sam Darnold for the starting role in training camp. The Panthers will only take on only $5 million of Mayfield’s contract, while the Browns pay $10.5 million. Mayfield agreed to void the other 3.5 million off his base salary to make the move possible, per Mike Garafolo.  The clear winner in this trade is Mayfield, as he gets to compete for the starting role on a young,…

Zechariah Owens, a 6’6” 350-lb tackle out of McDonough, Georgia, has committed to Clemson over finalists Penn State and Alabama. He’s ranked the No. 67 player and the No. 8 offensive tackle in the nation, according to 247 Sports. Owens will join OT Ian Reed and OG Harris Sewell as the third four-star offensive lineman to commit to Clemson in the class of 2023. He chose the Tigers over a Big Ten and SEC program after both conferences signed major media deals recently.  Owens added a little flair to his commitment video, as he teased a Penn State commitment before…

The college football landscape is currently being morphed into a polarized field. By 2024, there will be two top conferences, the SEC and Big Ten (B1G), while the ACC and company get squashed in the standings and the earnings. As hard as it is to accept for some fans, Clemson would benefit from jumping ship now.  Why Clemson should leave the ACC ASAP The ACC just can’t keep up with the expanding talent and revenue streams in the SEC and B1G. With USC and UCLA both leaving the PAC-12, it looks like CFB will be run by those two conferences. …

The Carolina Panthers have a real chance to improve in 2022. In order for that to happen, several of their returning players must make that next step. Here, I present three players to watch this season. TE Tommy Tremble  Tommy Tremble will be a vital part of the offense going forward because his strengths match the nature of Carolina’s outside zone, run-first offense. Fitterer took Tremble in the third round of the 2021 draft with the idea that he would serve as a dynamic blocker rather than a route runner. However, Tremble turned out to be proficient in the passing…

The unprecedented quarterback carousel of 2022 affected the Panthers despite their lack of a veteran acquisition. The rumors and uncertainty surrounding the position made it difficult for new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to commit to an offensive identity until the frenzy died down.  Veteran quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Jimmy Garoppolo are still available and being linked to Carolina, but GM Scott Fitterer won’t pounce until he is sure a player will give the Panthers a better chance to win. That day may not come however, as Panthers’ star wideout D.J. Moore has already been impressed with current starter Sam Darnold…

The 6’4” 290-lb behemoth Harris Sewell committed to Clemson on Wednesday over finalists Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas and Oklahoma. Sewell is one of the top linemen in the class of 2023, ranked the No. 5 offensive lineman in the nation as well as the No. 22 player in Texas by 247sports. Sewell has fantastic run blocking instincts in the open field with extremely strong hands. Additionally he displays solid footwork and discipline in pass protection. He hails out of Permian High School in Odessa, Texas.  Here’s Sewell’s dominance on display: https://twitter.com/jon_blau/status/1541592989268582402?s=21&t=L9sI36RcVMBFl7j2CppAmg The man just keeps on chugging into every level…

The quarterback position is up for grabs in Carolina after a disappointing 2021 campaign from Sam Darnold. After Darnold posted just 2,527 yards, 9 TDs and 13 picks in 12 games, the Panthers traded up to draft QB Matt Corral in the third round of this year’s NFL draft. Corral was reportedly the top QB on Carolina’s draft board after leading Ole Miss to a 10-3 season and the No. 8 ranking in the country.  Darnold has been named the starter “for now,” by head coach Matt Rhule, but it’s no secret that Corral will eventually contend for the starting…

The Panthers had a quietly efficient offseason that was overshadowed by their lack of QB signings. Nonetheless, Carolina was able to add talent at virtually every weak spot from 2021. GM Scott Fitterer started with the most pressing concern (apart from Sam Darnold): the offensive line. He also added starting-caliber players in all three levels of the defense as well as the backfield and special teams before the draft even took place. This is every spot where the Panthers should see noticeable improvement from new talent in 2022: Offensive Line – G Austin Corbett, C Bradley Bozeman, T Ikem Ekwonu…
