Everyone knew that the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft was going to be very QB heavy, but nobody saw six quarterbacks being taken in the first 12 picks, shattering the record for the most QB’s taken in the first 15 picks.
The interesting thing about this year’s draft is that while nobody knew how quickly the first six quarterbacks would get picked up, everyone did know who the first six quarterbacks would be, and that they would all likely be picked up either in the first round, or early in the second round.
But now what?
No Remaining Quarterbacks Are Ranked High
After Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy, and Bo Nix who all graded out as Top 30 players, the next prospects barely rank in the Top 100 according to ESPN’s rankings. According to their rankings, here are their best remaining players:
- Spencer Rattler – 98th Overall
- Michael Pratt – 175th Overall
- Kedon Slovis – 246th Overall
- Jordan Travis – 258th Overall
- Devin Leary – 266th Overall
In total there are 257 NFL Draft picks, meaning that statistically, only three more quarterbacks will get picked up, with Rattler being being picked up late in the third round, and Pratt and Slovis getting picked up in the seventh round. Obviously the draft doesn’t work like that with some players getting picked up much later than projected and others way earlier.
It’s totally possible that a player like Sam Hartman (ranked 315th) could get picked up, despite being over 50 spots out of the top 257 (number of draft picks). There could be only one more QB picked up, and there could five more – only time will tell.
But will any players get picked up tonight in the second or third round?
Teams That Need a Quarterback
There are plenty of teams that are still looking for a quarterback including the Las Vegas Raiders, Las Angeles Rams, New York Giants, and the New Orleans Saints, but it’s quite possible that none of them will take a quarterback tonight in the second or third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Of the remaining players looking to get drafted, none of them are likely to be Week One starters, or grade at a level that teams will be rushing to get them. Instead, they will be drafted to fit a scheme. In other words, if Kedon Slovis gets picked up by a team, it is unlikely to cause a second rush on quarterbacks.
Will Any QB Get Picked Up in the Second or Third Round?
It may seem really odd to go from six picks in the Top 12 to no more in the top 100, but that is a real possibility that could happen. If there is one team that could potentially take a quarterback tonight it would likely be the Las Vegas Raiders who were hoping that somehow there would still be a top six quarterback last night for their 13th overall pick.
Every other team will likely wait until at least the fourth round to go after a quarterback since they would picking up a project, or a player that will likely sit behind the starter for a year or two and later develop into a starter.
In other words, after last night’s QB firework show, don’t expect much tonight.
