The moment Taylor Swift was going to watch Super Bowl LVIII, fans and analysts thought that the biggest football game of the 2023 NFL season was going to be its biggest yet.
It had all the perfect elements to become the most epic game yet: the history between the two teams and the narratives that drive the game beforehand made it one of the biggest TV events of the year. Having an international pop star dating one of the game’s biggest stars also has fresh eyes curious about what the NFL is all about.
It turns out that these predictions are right on the money as one of the biggest media-focused data companies released mind-blowing information that exemplifies how big of an event it was.
Nielsen: 123 million viewers watched the Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl LVIII
Nielsen, one of the leading companies that follows media events, released the figures for viewer activity during Super Bowl LVIII. They claimed that it was easily the most-watched NFL game in TV history.
Erik Gruenwell of Media Play News wrote more about the report:
The rating firm said an average of 123.4 million people either watched the CBS, Nickelodeon, Univision broadcasts, and/or streaming platforms, which included Paramount+, CBS.com, CBS app and NFL+. That broke last year’s record of 115.1 million viewers.
Nielsen said upwards of 200 million watched at least part of the game, which is up from 184 million during last year’s Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.
Why did Super Bowl LVIII garner plenty of viewers?
There are various reasons why the Kansas City Chiefs’ overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers was one of the most-watched games in history.
The most obvious reason is Taylor Swift. The Shake It Off singer brought plenty of new fans into the game as Swifties watched Chiefs games to support their idol.
Moreover, the stories surrounding the two teams make them too irresistible to miss out on for NFL fans. Brock Purdy’s rise from Mr. Irrelevant to a Super Bowl-caliber QB, Patrick Mahomes doing everything he could to drag a struggling Kansas City offense to the Super Bowl, and Kyle Shanahan’s Super Bowl jinx made for good TV.
With the way the Super Bowl is trending, it wouldn’t be weird if Super Bowl LIX would even get more attention. This would be assured if the Chiefs were attempting a three-peat by then.
It would also help if Taylor Swift hadn’t written an entire album to Travis Kelce if they ever break up in the future.
