The Denver Broncos break is finally over. Rookies reported to training camp last Wednesday, while veterans reported Tuesday. Their first practice begins Friday, and fans are welcome to observe.
One intriguing storyline surrounding their team ahead of training camp is whether their Pro Bowl offensive weapon will report to camp.
The Denver Broncos Pro Bowl wide receiver seeks a new contract
Courtland Sutton wants a new contract.
He has two years left on his 4-year, $60.8 million contract with $2 million guaranteed. He has a base salary of $13 million, $2 million guaranteed, and a cap hit of $17,395,576 for 2024. He also has a base salary of $13.5 million, $0 guaranteed, and a $17,825,000 cap hit for 2025, per Spotrac.
He skipped voluntary workouts and OTAs but attended mandatory minicamp. He also considered skipping the start of training camp if they didn’t extend him during their intermission. The wait is finally over.
Did he report to training camp?
According to Sean Payton, he didn’t have any conversations with him but expects him to report to training camp.
“And there won’t be any (conversations),” Payton said. “He’ll be here like we talked about, and he’ll be ready to go.”
What is his asking price?
Courtland Sutton seeks more guaranteed money and a $2 to $3 million raise.
“He’s due about $13.6 million in cash this year,” Fowler said via Heavy’s Josh Buckhalter. “He’d like to see that get up, maybe in that $15-$16 million range. We’ll see if they can find a sweet spot.”
Why the Denver Broncos should and shouldn’t extend him
The Broncos should extend him for three reasons. First, he’s been a reliable target throughout his career. Second, he turns 29 in October and has plenty of gas left in the tank. Finally, he’s asking for a small raise, only a $2 to $3 million raise with some guaranteed money.
The Broncos should not extend him for three reasons. First, they are in the middle of a rebuild. Second, they could get draft compensation if they trade him. Finally, the team has plenty of young receivers, including Marvin Mims and Troy Franklin.
Will they extend him before the season?
