A year removed from a Super Bowl appearance, the 2023 Philadelphia Eagles sputtered to an 11-6 record (lost five of their final six games) and an eventual blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round of the playoffs. The most significant difference between the two renditions of the Eagles? The performance of quarterback Jalen Hurts. After finishing runner-up to Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes for MVP in 2023, Hurts threw a career-worst 15 interceptions last season, with his quarterback rating dropping nearly 15 points from the season prior.
The Eagles have since moved on from offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, turning to longtime Dallas Cowboys play-caller Kellen Moore as his successor. The initial results are promising, with Hurts making monster players during the beginning of team training camp this week.
Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts: Making Plays to Start Training Camp
All eyes will be on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts this preseason after a down 2023 campaign. Hurts struggled to replicate his MVP-caliber 2022 season during his first season under offensive coordinator Brian Johnson. However, Philadelphia has since inked Kellen Moore to become the team’s next offensive play-caller while adding elite running back Saquon Barkley via free agency.
Eagles training camp day 1 takeaways:
– Hurts looked sharp. Hit Goedert for a nice 35-yard TD (15/16 1 TD)
– Offensive playbook looked different from last year (pre-snap motion utilized)
– James Bradberry got looks at 2nd team safety
– Tyler Steen starting RG

The Eagles opened up team training camp this week, with the NFC East squad taking the field on Wednesday. According to Brenden Deeg of The Score, Hurts shined on day one of the Kellen Moore era. Hurts finished the day 15-of-16, highlighted by a 35-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dallas Goedert. Hurts also scampered for a long run after a pre-snap motion fake pitch to Barkley. The Eagles utilized a lot of pre-snap motion to open training camp, an element largely absent from the team’s playcalling last year.
Hurts: Entering Year Five
Jalen Hurts will enter his fifth season as the signal-caller for the Philadelphia Eagles. A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Hurts played a reserve role behind Carson Wentz as a rookie but took over under center in 2021. The dual-threat passer threw 16 touchdowns against nine picks while adding ten scores via the ground. Hurts took a massive step forward in 2022, throwing for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six picks. He also ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns while earning MVP votes.
However, the Alabama product took a step backward last season, throwing a career-worst 15 interceptions. He also rushed for only 3.9 yards per carry, the worst average of his four-year NFL career. Hurts’ legs became obsolete in the team’s road loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the postseason, rushing for five yards while being sacked three times.
