Oklahoma football will have a former quarterback selected in the 2024 NFL draft, but it will not be last year’s starter, Dillon Gabriel. Instead, it will be a former five-star mega prospect and the successor to Jalen Hurts, Spencer Rattler. The Arizona native spent three seasons in Norman before darting for the South Carolina Gamecocks. One NFL draft expert, Reese’s Senior Bowl Executive Director Jim Nagy, believes Rattler will hear his name called during either the second or third round come April. Wisconsin Badgers gunslinger Tanner Mordecai could also hear his name late in the draft, but he currently projects as an undrafted free agent. He threw four touchdowns against one pick in three years with the Sooners.
Senior Bowl’s Jim Nagy: Big on Spencer Rattler
Nagy spoke to NFL insider Ari Meirov, saying, “I think he could go on day 2. Second, third round, that just depends on how the whole thing plays out. The interview process will be big for Spencer; I think he understands that. Spencer had cameras put in front of him when he was a 17-year-old kid.”

Rattler will be at next week's @SeniorBowl in Mobile.

Nagy continued, saying, “I think there is a perception out there of Spencer from way back when. That was five, six years ago. He has grown up a ton. Shane Beamer and all the guys that I’m close to with South Carolina just talk about what a great job he did there and that program as a leader in the last couple of years.”
Rattler started his career as a five-star recruit with Oklahoma football, but after being usurped by Caleb Williams, he transferred to South Carolina. He played two seasons under Shane Beamer, throwing for 37 touchdowns against 20 picks over 25 games. He completed 68% of his passes. The Gamecocks struggled this season, going 5-7 and missing the postseason.
“Along with all the talent that everyone has known Spencer has had going back to his days in high school, this is a guy that can start in the NFL. I don’t see him going on day three. I think Spencer Rattler ends up somewhere on day 2,” concluded Nagy on Rattler.
Spencer Rattler: Starting College Career With Oklahoma Football
Rattler, the top-ranked quarterback in the class of 2019, spent his first three seasons with the Sooners. He spent his first season behind Jalen Hurts before becoming the full-time starter in 2020. He threw for 3,031 yards and 28 touchdowns against seven picks. However, Rattler struggled the following season, including being benched against the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry. Caleb Williams took over for Rattler, never relinquishing the job.
