The Chicago Bears probably have one of the biggest “good” problems in the offseason. Despite a disappointing end to their 2023 campaign, they have a chance to do something franchise-altering as they hold the no. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Now, they can draft Caleb Williams with that pick and trade away Justin Fields, or trade the pick for more assets.
Regardless of what they decide to do, it could only be a win-win scenario for the franchise.
However, if you ask renowned NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., he believes it only makes sense for the Bears to trade Fields and start anew with Williams as their QB1.
Why the Chicago Bears Should Draft Caleb Williams, Move on From Justin Fields
Kiper highlighted two points why the Bears should opt to draft Williams and trade Fields. For one, the USC Trojans standout is a “better prospect” than their current QB. While Fields is among the best dual-threat QBs in the league, his inconsistency three years through his pro career is a bit concerning.
The Bears have yet to achieve anything significant with Fields leading the way, so having a fresh start with a better prospect is ideal at this point in time.
“There are too many unknowns for a guy with 38 career starts. He has completed just 60.2% of his passes while throwing 40 touchdown passes with 30 interceptions and has averaged just 7.0 yards per attempt in his career. Williams, my top-ranked prospect, is ahead of Fields as a passer — the USC product has the skill set and instincts to be a top-tier quarterback at the next level,” Kiper wrote, via ESPN.
As for his second reason, Kiper highlighted that by taking a rookie quarterback, they can “reset” their QB clock and build a better roster around him.
“If they keep Fields, they’d have to decide on his fifth-year option this spring and then extend his contract within the next year. Are they ready to do that? With a rookie, they’d get four years at a much less expensive cap number before having to pay up,” the NFL Draft analyst added.
It remains to be seen what the Chicago Bears will do with their pick. As mentioned, there are tons of possibilities for them. If they decide to trade that selection, they could get significant assets in return. Of course the same can be said if they move Justin Fields.
With that being said, the real question the Bears need to answer is if they want to build around Fields or have a new face in Caleb Williams lead the way.
