BREAKING NEWS: The South Carolina Gamecocks added a Veteran Quarterback from the Transfer Portal

The 5-7 South Carolina Gamecocks finished the regular season with the worst record in Shane Beamer’s tenure as head coach.

Their offense struggled this season. They ranked 81st in yards per game with 363.1 and 77th in points per game with 26.

The Gamecocks added a veteran quarterback from the transfer portal.

Robby Ashford announced on Twitter/X that he will be transferring to South Carolina:

He started his collegiate career in Oregon

Robby Ashford committed to the Oregon Ducks as a three-star recruit for the 2020 season. Ashford did not appear in any games in his two seasons at Oregon and entered the transfer portal following the end of his second season.

He transferred to Auburn

Robby Ashford transferred to the Auburn Tigers for the 2022 season. Ashford started the 2022 season as the backup to T.J. Finley. An injury to Finley in Week 4 allowed Ashford to finish the season as the starting quarterback.

Ashford completed 123 out of 250 pass attempts for 1,613 yards. He threw seven touchdowns and seven interceptions, finishing with a 2-6 record. He also rushed for 710 yards on 153 carries and seven rushing touchdowns.

Ashford served as the backup to Payton Thorne for the 2023 season. Ashford appeared in ten games and completed 14 out of 27 pass attempts for 145 yards. He threw two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 217 yards on 46 carries and five rushing touchdowns.

Ashford entered the transfer portal after the conclusion of the 2023 season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

South Carolina is looking to replace their starting QB, who started the last two seasons

The Gamecocks are looking to find a replacement for Spencer Rattler, who was the starting QB in their last two seasons. Rattler completed 539 out of 798 pass attempts for 6,212 yards and threw 37 touchdowns and 20 interceptions, finishing with a 13-12 record in his two seasons with the team.

There will be a QB competition

South Carolina will have a QB competition this fall. Ashford will compete against redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers and true freshman Dante Reno.
