New Houston Texans RB Boldly Predicts Championship Run in 2024

The Houston Texans are one of a dozen NFL teams that are still without a Super Bowl, but new running back Joe Mixon thinks that could change in 2024.

The Texans, who are the newest franchise in the league since joining as an expansion team in 2002, have struggled to even come close to a Super Bowl. After a promising 2023 season with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback, hopes for the Texans are as high as they’ve ever been.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon (28) signals for a first down after a run in the fourth quarter of a Week 10 NFL football game between the Houston Texans and the Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati. The Houston Texans won, 30-27.

The Houston Texans are welcoming in new RB Joe Mixon in what will be his first year in the NFL playing for a team that is not the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mixon is joined by several other big-name free agency grabs, and that accumulation of talent is one of the reasons Mixon thinks his new team will have a chance to make a championship run this season.

While Mixon hasn’t won a championship since being drafted by the Bengals with the 48th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, he did make an appearance in a Super Bowl and was one play away from winning that Super Bowl.

Mixon may not know what it’s like to win a Super Bowl in the NFL, but there is no doubt that he knows what it takes.

Mixon wasn’t the only notable addition made by the Texans this offseason. Mixon is joined by star wide receiver Stefon Diggs in the Texans’ quest for their first Super Bowl.

Houston also beefed up their defensive line with the additions of Denico Autry, Danielle Hunter and Mario Edwards Jr. Another solid addition to their front seven is former Tennessee Titans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, who has taken on a leadership role with the Texans.

#Texans veteran linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair ‘has been really valuable, just his experience, the way he communicates, the leadership that he beings. When it comes to bringing guys together, that’s what Azeez does. He’s also a tremendous player’ coach DeMeco Ryans said @KPRC2 pic.twitter.com/I5WTEJNPib

Topped off with valuable re-signings of wide receiver Noah Brown, tight end Dalton Schultz, linebacker Neville Hewitt and defensive end Derek Barnett, the Texans are in a position to go further than they did in 2023.

One of the biggest reasons many believe the Texans will have a chance to make a championship run in 2024 is due to the promise they showed in 2023.

With a rookie head coach in DeMeco Ryans and a rookie quarterback in C.J. Stroud, the Texans won a playoff game in convincing fashion. While one playoff game may not seem like a lot, the Texans have never made it past the divisional round of the playoffs.

Stroud had a record-setting year in his first season as the signal caller for the Texans, which is another reason hopes are now high for the franchise. Wide receiver Nico Collins explained what he thought about Stroud when he first saw him in the Texans’ building in an article from ESPN.

“The way [Stroud] first walked in the building, you could tell he had that ‘it’ factor. You could just feel it,” Collins told ESPN in August. “When the game slows down for him and he figures out it’s just football at the end of the day, it’s going to be a scary sight. The sky’s the limit for him. I can’t wait to see it.”

Collins’ assessment was accurate as Stroud became just the fifth rookie quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards. Stroud was also the first Texans rookie to pass for 23 touchdowns and he was the first Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback to be named to a Pro Bowl.

Stroud’s 470-yard passing game was the most by a rookie in the history of the NFL. Now, Stroud will be going into his second season with additional playmakers and a year of experience under his belt. It is not hard to see why Mixon thinks the Texans have a chance to make a deep playoff run.
