NFL: The Green Bay Packers made a lot of changes this offseason. Of course, the most notable of these was trading four-time MVP and future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets in favor of 2020 NFL Draft first round pick Jordan Love. While there has been a great deal of media scrutiny and hype surrounding Love, one other change has gone largely unnoticed outside of Green Bay.
The Packers also made the decision to move on from kicker Mason Crosby, who is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer. Drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft, Crosby had a very successful run with the Packers, winning a Super Bowl with the team during this fourth season.
In his place is rookie Anders Carlson, who is also a sixth round draft pick. Green Bay selected him in the 2023 NFL Draft despite many draft experts believing that he would not be drafted. Carlson has had an inconsistent camp, which has led many Packers fans to call for the return of Crosby.
Mason Crosby Puts Anders Carlson and the Green Bay Packers on Notice (NFL)
On Thursday, Carlson missed two more field goal attempts in practice. He has had several days that have seen him make one of six kicks or two of nine. However, Carlson has also had days where he is near perfect. It is the inconsistency that has fans concerned.
Shortly after Packers beat writers posted on social media about Carlson’s missed kicks, Crosby posted this:
In the words of @DeionSanders “I ain’t hard 2 find” #win #dadszn #football pic.twitter.com/KFb7JIepGV
— Mason Crosby (@crosbykicks2) August 24, 2023
Clearly, Crosby wants to come back, despite having sold his home in Green Bay this offseason. This could also be seen as a message to all NFL teams that are facing kicker uncertainties.
For their part, Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst have stated on multiple occasions that they will not bring in another kicker to compete at camp and that they are prepared to deal with the struggles having a rookie kicker brings.
Well, if they change their mind, they have Crosby’s number. He won’t be hard to find.
