When the New York Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers in a trade with the Green Bay Packers, their expectations for the 2023 NFL season were as high as anyone’s. They firmly believed, as did many outside of the organization, that they were instant Super Bowl contenders with him under center. While that might have been true, neither the Jets nor the rest of the NFL world were able to find out.
Rodgers’ first season in a Jets uniform lasted all of four offensive snaps. Unfortunately, he tore his Achilles tendon and was lost for the year. Zach Wilson, who was supposed to be given a year or two behind Rodgers to learn the ropes, fell out of favor with ownership when he struggled to make the team competitive. Owner Woody Johnson recently said that the team would definitely be looking for a backup quarterback this offseason because “We didn’t have one last season.”
The New York Jets Still Believe in Aaron Rodgers
Despite finishing 7-10, however, there is plenty of optimism in New Jersey. After all, they still have plenty of young stars and they will get a healthy Rodgers next season. Even at 40 years old and coming off a major injury, Rodgers still gives the Jets the best chance to win in 2024.
While there are some that may doubt the Jets next season, in part because of Rodgers’ age and injury situation, his teammates are certainly not concerned. Star cornerback Sauce Gardner helped explain why in an interview earlier this week.
New York Jets Cornerback Sauce Gardner Say an Aaron Rodgers Pass Left Burn Marks on His Gloves
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Gardner had the following to say when praising his future Hall of Fame teammate:
“It’s always great to have him around. He the best quarterback I’ve ever seen, I’ve ever played with. The things he does and the throws he can make, like, I’ve never seen them before. Not in a game, not in practice with my other quarterbacks. I’ve just never seen them.”
“He’s gonna zip the ball. I remember this one play in practice, he threw the ball to the receiver. I almost picked it. My hands are there. The ball went through my hands. My gloves had burned, like burn marks on them. It went that fast. I couldn’t believe it. I’m like, ‘Bro this is the first time this has ever happened.’ Like, he’s just different.”
This honestly sounds like the kind of story one would expect to hear about the man Rodgers replaced in Green Bay (and a former Jets quarterback himself): Brett Favre.
It remains to be seen how good Rodgers will be coming off of his injury, but there is no denying that if anyone is going to come back from that injury and compete at 40 years old, it is him.
