New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is well-known for his intense desire to play with guys that he has a history with. That is why the Jets made such a strong effort to surround the future Hall of Famer with his friends last season. Of course, his friends ended up playing far more than Rodgers, who tore his Achilles tendon just four snaps into the 2023 NFL season.
In order to lure Rodgers to New York, the Jets signed wide receiver Allen Lazard to a four-year $44 million contract before they even came to an agreement with the Green Bay Packers on a trade package for Rodgers. They also signed Nathaniel Hackett as their offensive coordinator. Rodgers won two NFL MVP Awards with Hackett as his offensive coordinator in Green Bay.
In addition to Lazard and Hackett, the Jets also reunited Rodgers with wide receiver Randall Cobb, offensive tackle Billy Turner, and safety Adrian Amos.
New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Is Trying to Recruit Former Green Bay Packers Teammate Davante Adams
According to a report by NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport on Sunday:
“My understanding is Aaron Rodgers has been trying to recruit Davante Adams to the Jets — remember, the Jets kinda made a run at him this past year, there was nothing there, expected to try this offseason again.
“From what I’m told, the Raiders want to win, believe they can and have zero plans to trade Davante Adams.”
Rodgers and Adams, of course, were one of the best quarterback-wide receiver duos in the NFL for nearly half a decade. Adams, however, forced a trade from the Packers in large part because he did not know what the future held in Green Bay at the quarterback position.
Ironically, since being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders to reunite with his good friend Derek Carr, Adams has played with five different starting quarterbacks. Meanwhile, Packers quarterback Jordan Love posted a better first year starting than either Rodgers or Brett Favre did with Green Bay:
Quarterback | Completion % | Yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions | Passer Rating |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jordan Love | 64.2% | 4,159 | 32 | 11 | 96.1 |
Aaron Rodgers | 63.6% | 4,038 | 28 | 13 | 93.8 |
Brett Favre | 64.1% | 3,227 | 18 | 13 | 85.3 |
Aaron Rodgers Is a Terrible General Manager
A recent tell-all report by Diana Russini of The Athletic cited one source inside the Jets organization that claimed that Rodgers was not Joe Douglas’ assistant general manager. Instead, the source said Rodgers is the real general manager of the Jets and Douglas is his assistant.
And if that is truly the case, the Jets need to figure out a way to change that dynamic. The reality of the matter is that the players Rodgers’ brought with him to New York have been awful:
- Lazard: 23 receptions, 311 yards, one touchdown
- Cobb: five receptions, 39 yards, one touchdown
- Amos: released before the season even ended
- Billy Turner: Only played 23% of offensive snaps on one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL
- Hackett: would have been fired if Rodgers had not gone to bat for him to ownership
This is not to say that Adams would be bad in New York. Clearly, Adams does not need stellar quarterback play to be a dominant wide receiver. He led the NFL with 14 touchdowns in 2022 with Carr and Jarrett Stidham throwing him passes. This year, he went over 1,000 yards receiving for the fifth time in six years despite having Jimmy Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer, and Aiden O’Donnell as his quarterbacks.
Which is exactly why the Raiders will not move him. With a new head coach, one that Adams desperately wanted, the Raiders will be relying on their star wide receiver to help them take the next step back into contention.
Rodgers will have to look elsewhere.
