It is safe to say that the end of the New York Jets 2023 season was the least expected outcome they might have imagined at this point one year ago. While they had not acquired future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers yet, they were starting the process of trade talks. And let’s face it: they knew they were going to get him before the officially did.
That is why the went out and signed free agent wide receiver Allen Lazard and gave him a four-year $44 million contract. It is also why they hired Nathaniel Hackett to be their offensive coordinator. Rodgers had played with and thrived with both individuals during his days in Green Bay.
After the Aaron Rodgers trade was completed, they also brought in several of his friends from Green Bay: Randall Cobb, Billy Turner, and Adrian Amos. It was supposed to be a great year in Mr. Rodgers’ neighborhood; but it was anything but.
Rodgers tore his Achilles early in Week One, Lazard and Cobb woefully underperformed, and Turner couldn’t crack the rotation of one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. The Jets finished 7-10, the only reason Hackett is returning in 2024 is because Rodgers wants him, and they’ve alienated Zach Wilson, who was supposed to be mentored by Rodgers.
The New York Jets Are Going to Try Trading for Davante Adams to Make Aaron Rodgers Happy
Rodgers will definitely be back in 2024, though he is 40 years old and coming off of a very serious injury. He also has huge influence over the front office and the locker room. It is imperative that the Jets surround him with players that will help him be as successful as possible.
For better or worse, that also may mean trying to add another one of his good buddies to the team.
Multiple reports around the NFL trade deadline stated that the Jets were trying to acquire Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams, who thrived with the Green Bay Packers while Rodgers was there. Unfortunately for New York, they could not get a deal done.
And now, according more more reports, the Jets are going to try again.
Bleacher Report Says the New York Jets Are Trying to Get Davante Adams
According to Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report:
“The Jets inquired with the Raiders about Adams ahead of this past year’s trade deadline. They were reportedly rebuffed, but that doesn’t mean a deal is necessarily off the table. In fact, a source told Schefter that Gang Green would again pursue the 31-year-old six-time Pro Bowler this offseason.
“Well, that time has just about arrived.”
Gagnon also points out that this storyline will linger long into the offseason. The Raiders would only save $1.8 million on their salary cap if they trade him before June 1. If they trade him after June 1, however, they would save $17.5 million.
PFF Predicts the New York Jets Will Acquire Davante Adams for a 2025 Second Round Pick
The Jets do not have a second round pick in 2024 because it is going to the Green Bay Packers as the final part of the compensation package from the Aaron Rodgers trade. Therefore, PFF believes that they will use a 2025 second round pick to acquire the best wide receiver Rodgers has ever played for:
Adams got his chance to return to the West Coast and play for the team he grew up rooting for, the Las Vegas Raiders, but the team quickly shipped off Derek Carr, his college quarterback, and his time there so far has been as up-and-down as my blackjack runs in Vegas during Super Bowl week. Here, he reunites with Aaron Rodgers as the two look to make a Super Bowl run of their own.
The problem, though, as PFF points out, is that the Raiders may not be inclined to trade Adams. They hired Antonio Pierce, who Adams wanted promoted from interim head coach to the permanent role, and they hired Adams’ former coach in Green Bay, Luke Getsy, as offensive coordinator.
Still, the Jets have shown they are willing to do anything to make Rodgers happy. Perhaps he will push them to make an offer the Raiders can’t refuse.
