Zach Wilson’s future with the New York Jets doesn’t look good, and if latest reports are to be believed, the two parties are seemingly headed to Splitsville this offseason.
When Aaron Rodgers went down in the first game of the season due to injury, Wilson was once again thrown into the spotlight as QB1. While the former no. 2 overall pick showed some flashes of brilliance, he was inconsistent at best.
In the end, the Jets were unable to contend for a playoff spot, putting more criticisms on Wilson and his ability to be a starting-level or even backup quarterback in the NFL.
Zach Wilson Looking for a Change in Scenery Away from New York Jets
Now, according to the latest reports, Wilson is assessing the options he has for potential trade destinations. The Jets are also said to be open to gauging Wilson’s trade market value, especially amid the team’s search for a backup quarterback.
Dan Graziano of ESPN shared the latest intel on Wilson, highlighting that what happens in the 2024 NFL Draft could determine the potential teams he could join.
“I’m told that New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson has begun evaluating trade options, including teams that would be good fits. He’s open to playing for an offensive-minded head coach, something he has never had in New York,” Graziano wrote.
“How free agency and the draft play out could determine the next steps, based on which jobs are available. But the Jets have agreed to gauge Wilson’s trade market, and it’s only natural for a player and his agent to do some legwork to set the stage for a deal. Whether the Jets have actually given Wilson permission to seek a trade is still unclear, though.
It has yet to be seen if any team will be interested in Wilson, but at 24 years old along with three years of starting experience (including working with Rodgers), the youngster could be an intriguing reclamation project for teams with strong offensive systems.
Zach Wilson’s Disappointing New York Jets Career
There were high hopes that Zach Wilson would be the New York Jets’ quarterback of the future when they took him no. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
To be fair, none of the top QBs from the class has really succeeded with their respective teams. Regardless, it doesn’t make Wilson’s career so far less disappointing.
Aside from his lack of accountability in previous years that made it hard for him to connect with his teammates, Wilson’s overall play just isn’t at an NFL level. His lack of accuracy and failure to read defenses quickly are evident, while his decision-making is also questionable.
Wilson had his moments, but there have been more bad than good. The fact that he has been benched and replaced by other backup QBs multiple times throughout his young career also speaks volumes of his struggles.
Perhaps a new team could help Wilson turn things around. And hopefully, that’s the case. But for now, Wilson and the Jets will have to wait for a little bit more to see what happens with their young QB.
