The New England Patriots need a quarterback after their failed Mac Jones experiment, and they might actually get the QB they need and want in the 2024 NFL Draft without the need to trade up.
According to the latest predictions by ESPN, the Patriots could land Heisman winner and LSU standout Jayden Daniels with the no. 3 pick in the upcoming draft.
New England Patriots Select … Jayden Daniels From LSU
Caleb Williams is the clear-cut no. 1 pick in the 2024 Draft. At this point, there’s no debate about that. What experts couldn’t agree on, however, is who will go second and third between Daniels and Drake Maye.
There are a lot of analysts putting Daniels above Maye, though, which is why the talk has been that the Patriots might need to trade up if they want the Tigers product. The Washington Commanders own the no. 2 pick, and a number of mock drafts from other networks have them taking Daniels.
In the latest piece by Seth Walder of ESPN predicting the starting quarterbacks for every team in the 2024 campaign, he has Daniels falling at no. 3 to the Patriots.
Here’s what Walder wrote in his prediction:
“Maybe the Patriots will trade down or become tantalized by Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and take him with the No. 3 pick. But this is a team that needs a quarterback after suffering with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe last season and is in range to get a high-end rookie without trading up. That’s usually too good a position for teams to pass up, and LSU’s Daniels fits here.”
As for the Commanders, Walder has them taking Maye as their quarterback of the future.
Sure enough, the Patriots getting Daniels will be a big win for them. While the LSU superstar has his flaws, particularly his build and frame, his accuracy, football intelligence and overall potential are definitely among the best in the class.
New England Patriots’ Thoughts on Jayden Daniels
For what it’s worth, it has been recently reported as well that the New England Patriots want to see Jayden Daniels build up more and increase his weight, per Chad Graff of The Athletic.
The Patriots aren’t really concerned about Daniels’ height and hand size, but his frame and penchant for taking big hits are something New England would want to assess as they explore their options and do their due diligence on their draft prospects.
It remains to be seen what the Patriots will eventually do, but fans should keep an eye on Daniels potentially heading to New England.
