The Minnesota Vikings have signed former NFL veteran Josh McCown to be their next quarterbacks coach, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. McCown, who played in the NFL for 16 seasons with a dozen different franchises has been around the league since 2002 and transitioned to a coach after retiring as a player.
McCown was previously the quarterbacks coach for Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers, but was fired alongside their Head Coach in Frank Reich. He will get another opportunity to show his knowledge on Kevin O’Connell’s staff as Minnesota’s quarterback coach. Chris O’Hara, who was the previous quarterbacks coach has been named as their pass game specialist.
Minnesota Vikings Did Not Meet Expectations in 2023 Season
The Vikings ended their 2023 campaign tied for last place in the NFC North are looking to reach the top of the division once again next season. The Vikings were NFC North champions in 2022 finishing with a 13-4 record and made the playoffs.
The main reason for this year’s disappointments was mainly produced by injuries. Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles during the middle of the season, which forced Minnesota to shuffle through backup options for the remainder. They made a trade mid-season trade for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Dobbs. Who managed to keep them in multiple tight games, but was not the long-term solution.
Vikings Starting Quarterback Position is Vacant Heading into 2024
While Minnesota has their quarterback coach locked in for next season, their man under center for McCown to coach is currently a question mark. Kirk Cousins, who has been the franchise guy since signing a 3-year deal worth $84 million in guaranteed money is a free agent this off-season and has not confirmed whether he’s committed to re-signing.
If Cousins plans to test the waters in free agency, the Vikings will need make a decision whether to trade up in this year’s draft to select a new guy for their franchise or turn to free agency. However, multiple reports indicate that Minnesota is trying their hardest to get a deal done with Cousins. Who proved he can lead this team to the playoffs in 2022.
