Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur is already a rising star in the coaching ranks in the NFL. The one thing that is starting to stand out in his offense is how quarterbacks are able to thrive in this offense. All four quarterbacks that the Jets put onto the field last season were close to exceptional in his offense. Jets fans saw the offense flourish in the small relief snaps that Josh Johnson played. They also saw it in the game that Joe Flacco started. The offense really started to show in the four games that Zach Wilson missed, which could really be summed up to the upset win over the Bengals.
Why Is That?
This is mainly due to most of the Jets quarterbacks already being in the league long enough for the system to flourish. LaFleur’s offense got better all around as the season progressed. However, this offense was only ranked 26th in the NFL last season. The key to the offense being successful late was the difference in how many turnovers the offense committed in contrast to the beginning of the season. Although in small sample sizes, this led to a higher passer rating and higher completion percentages. This is also where Zach Wilson’s five game stretch with no interceptions came from as well.
Is LaFleur ready to get a head coaching gig anytime soon?
This is where the problems lie. Most of this offense’s success came in small sample sizes. This should ground Jets fans from how the offense started last season before Wilson got hurt. Another year with Wilson at QB and more weapons on offense should tell whether LaFleur’s offense will build on a strong finish from last season. Should his offense become better than last season’s 26th ranking, it is a possibility for LaFleur to get a head coaching job should come sooner than later. Of course, that would make him the second LaFleur to be a NFL head coach. This is something the NFL has not had since the Harbaughs were both coaching NFL teams.
