Colorado football is one win away from surpassing last season’s mark. The Colorado Buffaloes are two wins away from matching their combined total from the previous two seasons. Head coach Deion Sanders, the former NFL superstar turned program leader, leads the turnaround in Boulder, Colorado. Sanders, alongside son Shedeur and two-way star Travis Hunter, the program has become must-watch TV and one of the most polarizing teams in the country. However, not everyone has fallen for the Sanders charm, including an Atheist group that has taken exception to the head coach’s practices.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an advocation group for atheists, agnostics, and nontheists, is not fond of Sanders holding team prayer before games and has sent the University of Colorado a letter demanding he stop.
Atheists Attack Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders
According to the Washington Post through SkoBuffs Nation on Twitter:
The Freedom From Religion Foundation sent a letter to the University of Colorado demanding Coach Prime “cease infusing the football program with Christianity,” citing the appearance of a pastor who delivered a team prayer in the locker room last month after the Baylor game.
The religious foundation is unhappy with Colorado football, presumably housing a team chaplain, and believes Sanders violates the First Amendment. More notably, The Freedom From Religious Foundation takes exception to Sanders operating outside the conventional parameters of a head coach.
However, The First Liberty Institute, a Christian legal organization, went to bat for Coach Prime and Colorado football, issuing a counter letter, suggesting Sanders is well within his rights to hold team prayer. Colorado will enter this weekend with a 4-2 record and visit the Arizona Wildcats as a short-field goal underdog.
