The Dallas Cowboys are coming off of their worst game of the season, a 47-9 loss at home to the Detroit Lions. Now at 3-3, they are in third place in the NFC East and outside of the NFL Playoffs picture. Of course, there are 11 games left and plenty of time to right the ship, but Dallas has not exactly shown any kind of promise that they will actually be able to right the ship.
Team owner Jerry Jones recently went viral (again) for comments he made attempting to defend the transactions he made (or did not make) during the offseason, this time threatening the jobs of radio hosts that do not even work for the team.
Head coach Mike McCarthy has taken his fair share of criticism this season as well. The fact that the Cowboys did not give him a contract extension this offseason should tell fans all they need to know about the organization’s faith in him going forward.
One team legend, though, believes a great deal of responsibility for the team’s struggles, particularly on offense, lies with the players.
Dallas Cowboys Legend Troy Aikman Drags CeeDee Lamb and the Team’s Wide Receivers
Speaking on 1310 The Ticket in Dallas this morning, former Cowboys quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer Troy Aikman laid into CeeDee Lamb and the rest of Dallas’ wide receivers for running lazy routes and making life more difficult for Dak Prescott.
“I think the routes are terrible. I think they run terrible routes. And I’ve thought that beyond this year. I think CeeDee (Lamb) has got to improve in his route running. As a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position. That’s what I see.
“I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run, usually if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play, but if they’re not, they don’t. And it all ties together. I’m not impressed with that part of it.”
That is tough criticism coming from the last Cowboys quarterback to lead the team to the NFC Championship. But, of course, he is right.
Jones failed to go and get McCarthy and the offense a consistent running back during the offseason. As a result, the offense has become one-dimensional and predictable.
Getting a new running back is not really an option right now, so it is up to the Cowboys wide receivers to up their own games to make up for the lack of a ground game.
They just are not doing it.
