It was announced Thursday night that the New Orleans Saints were releasing veteran safety Marcus Maye and are allowing him to be an unrestricted free agent. Health was a bit of a concern as he appeared in seven games last season and he had 37 total tackles (27 solo, 10 assisted) with one sack, two interceptions and two pass deflections.
But where will the 30-year-old safety wind up during free agency? Let’s take a look at three teams that could definitely use his service.
Marcus Maye Team #1: Detroit Lions
The Detroit Lions are a young team that are expected to be legitimate NFC contenders for a while now after making the NFC Championship Game last season. However, one spot they need to improve the most is their secondary and with safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson an unrestricted free agent, this is going to be interesting.
The Lions could sign both players and really make a run as the secondary was the weakest part of this team last season.
Marcus Maye Team #2: Buffalo Bills
With safeties Mycah Hyde and Taylor Rapp becoming unrestricted free agents and the window to win a Super Bowl being right now, adding Maye would be a great option for the Bills. Playing in the AFC East with Aaron Rodgers and Tua Tagovailoa, Buffalo needs to be strong against the pass and this signing would really help.
It also doesn’t hurt to sign the former Jets safety just to add a little salt in the wound. The defense has to step up and get stops more consistently in 2024 and Maye could help in that department.
Marcus Maye Team #3: Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles had one glaring weakness last season and that was their secondary. They were 31st in the league with 252.7 passing yards allowed per game and getting a veteran like Maye to help sure up the safety position would benefit the team tremendously.
Pairing him up with Kevin Byard and Reed Blankenship at the safety positions would really help the team going forward, especially in new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s defense.
