The Philadelphia Eagles are looking for new coordinators on both sides of the football for the second consecutive season. However, it seems like the team internally has a plan in place for their next defensive coordinator.
Josina Anderson of CBS Sports is reporting that the Eagles are expecting that recently released defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will be the next defensive coordinator for the team. The Dolphins shockingly let Fangio go and make a lateral move to Philadelphia. Fangio was a consultant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022 for two weeks so this could be a bit of a reunion.
While nothing is set in stone as of this writing, the expectation is that the Philadelphia Eagles have landed their next defensive coordinator to join coach Nick Sirianni’s staff.
What does Vic Fangio bring to the Philadelphia Eagles?
The Miami Dolphins’ defense during the 2023 season was the biggest weakness for the team and as a huge reason why they lost the AFC East and were forced to be on the road in the AFC Wild Card Game. The defense ranked 22nd with 23.0 points per game allowed during the season and gave up 30+ points in four games this season.
This Philadelphia Eagles team has a lot of issues in the secondary that needs to be addressed, but Fangio has had success in this role before. He was named the 2018 AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year as the Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator and has 36 years of NFL coaching experience.
Despite the points allowed not being where you’d want to see, the Dolphins did allow the 10th-fewest yards per game. It will be interesting to see how a Vic Fangio defense in Philly looks.
