The NFL coaching carousel has now been completed today with all 8 teams with coaching openings now being closed. The Washington Commanders found their guy as the last team to fill their head coaching position in Dan Quinn. While many young coaches are getting their opportunity, many of the older and proven coaches were left out of the job hunt. It seems that the NFL is changing and with that it is letting people go.
NFL Legends Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel Don’t Get A Job
While there were 8 openings in total, Bill Belichick was only up for 7 of those jobs as The New England Patriots moved off from him after nearly a quarter century. Belichick was interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons, but after they went in a different direction with Raheem Morris, the market for Belichick shrunk to a total of no teams.
While there have been rumors now that Belichick may reunite with former players Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski at Fox, we now know that Belichick will not be coaching in 2024. His former player Mike Vrabel that was fired by the Tennessee Titans will also not be coaching in 2024. Vrabel has been exceptional in his tenure with the Titans and he was barely interviewed for a job over many young and unproven candidates.
Vrabel should certainly get a job next time around as he has been proven to be a winner with Ryan Tanehill as his quarterback. But it is quite shocking that both of these coaches did not get 1 of the 7 openings that they had. The NFL is clearly going in a new direction of younger and less proven guys as opposed to the old dogs.
Pete Carroll Joins Them And Is Out At Head Coach
Pete Carroll stepped down from head coach for the Seattle Seahawks, and he will also not be a head coach in 2024 as even though he wanted to continue coaching he will not have an option to do so in 2024. While ageism may be a factor in these guys not getting hired as they do not have the time left to be a head coach the way a lot of these younger guys do, it is still shocking that all of these proven champions did not get any jobs.
It may be because of how proven they are as they are guys that would come in and shape the culture of the franchise to their liking. The owners and GMs of these organizations may have wanted a younger guy that will listen to them as opposed to these proven guys that will do exactly what they want to do. Either way, it will be a very different league next year as many of the coaches we have taken for granted as some of the best in the league will not be on the field.
