After the New England Patriots parted ways with longtime coach Bill Belichick, the legendary tactician was heavily linked with the Atlanta Falcons. The 71-year-old coach even got to a second interview with the franchise and appeared poised to take over the team.
In a wild twist, however, the Falcons ended up hiring former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris to be their next head coach. Sure enough, it sent shockwaves to the whole NFL, especially after expectations that Belichick would quickly return to coaching.
With that being said, everyone is asking, what changed the mind of the Falcons in hiring Belichick?
Bill Belichick Hire Reportedly Scared Atlanta Falcons Front Office Members
According to a report from Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, one of the primary reasons the Falcons owner Arthur Blank didn’t push through hiring Belichick is because some of the members of the front office influenced him to do so. Apparently, some were afraid that they could lose their jobs with the changes Belichick’s arrival would cause.
Belichick’s age also reportedly played a factor, with Blank pondering if the changes that he would bring is worth it given that it’s unlikely for the veteran tactician to coach the team for another decade or so,
“My understanding is Blank went into the process wanting to hire Belichick as coach. But those around the owner, fearing what that could mean for them, nudged him in different directions. After a while, the amount of change hiring Belichick could require weighed on Blank. Especially when taking into consideration that making that amount of change might only get him two years of Belichick,” Breer wrote.
“And, again, none of this is really Belichick’s fault. It’s just that if you’re going to hire him, you have to go all in on that and, given that he’s not going to coach for another decade, it makes sense that that’d be hard for an owner to reckon with.”
It definitely makes sense why the Falcons backed out of the Belichick chase. Nonetheless, when you have the chance to hire a coach with a winning history and who knows what it takes to win games, it’s hard to pass up on such opportunity.
If continuity is the issue, the Falcons could have asked Belichick to hire someone who could very well be his successor to continue what he would build in Atlanta.
What’s Next for Bill Belichick After Atlanta Falcons Snub?
With Bill Belichick unlikely to be hired for the 2024 season, many might be wondering what Bill Belichick would do next.
So far, Belichick might be interested in pursuing TV opportunities. Considering he’s one of the brightest minds in the sport, that’s not a bad option at all.
Recently, there have been talks about FOX Sports potentially offering him to be a panelist on their NFL on Sunday show that would reunite him with Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. Sure enough, that will be must-watch TV as well.
