The Dallas Cowboys plan on extending starting quarterback Dak Prescott during the 2024 offseason. Prescott is in the last year of his contract and will be a free agent during the 2024 offseason. Prescott is 4-2 this season. He is 132/190 for 1,333 yards, 69.5% completion percentage, 7 yards per attempt, six touchdowns, and four interceptions.
The Dallas Cowboys QB suffered a season-ending injury after being franchise tagged in 2020
After four solid years under center, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, making the Pro Bowl twice, and leading the team to two playoff berths, Dallas franchised tagged Prescott on March 16, 2020. Dak signed the franchise tag tender on June 22, 2020.
Prescott injured his right ankle in Week 5 against the New York Giants. He suffered a compound fracture and dislocated his ankle. Dallas placed him on the injured reserve, and missed the rest of the season. He was 151/222 for 1,856 yards, 68% completion percentage, 8.4 yards per attempt, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions with a 2-3 record.
Andy Dalton, Garrett Gilbert, and Ben DiNucci all got starts at QB that season. Dalton started in nine games, and Gilbert and DiNucci started in one game.
Dak post-contract extension
After initially being franchised tagged for the second time, Prescott agreed to a 4-year, $160 million contract extension with Dallas on March 10, 2021.
Dak fully recovered from his ankle injury and started 16 games during the 2021 season with an 11-5 record. He was 410/596 for 4,449 yards, 68.8% completion percentage, 7.5 yards per attempt, 37 touchdowns, and ten interceptions. Dallas lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round.
Dak fractured his right thumb in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and missed the next five games. Cooper Rush started in his absence and had a 4-1 record. Prescott finished the season with an 8-4 record. He was 261/394 for 2,860 yards, 66.2% completion percentage, 7.3 yards per attempt, 23 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Dallas lost to San Francisco in the Divisional Round last year.
Trey Lance trade
After losing the backup quarterback job to Sam Darnold, San Francisco traded Trey Lance to Dallas for a 2024 4th-round pick. Dallas traded for him because they wanted a different perspective from a young QB.
The trade for Trey Lance doesn’t affect the Cowboys’ plan at QB. Dak will remain the starter once they get the deal done this offseason. Dak will be turning 31 on July 29th. He has plenty of years left to go.
