The New York Giants have a vital 2024 season coming up. This season will likely decide whether QB Daniel Jones is the quarterback of the future or not. It could also end up deciding whether GM Joe Schoen is going to continue being the Giants’ general manager going forward.
At the end of the 2022 season, Schoen awarded Daniel Jones with a $160 million contract over four years. Last season, that contract did not age well due to multiple injuries. Unfortunately, at training camp, Daniel Jones is not looking much better.
Daniel Jones Struggling With Deep Passes
One thing the Giants need to get better at this season is converting deep passes. This morning, Daniel Jones had several opportunities to work on that with his wide receivers.
Unfortunately, it did not go so well today. According to Bobby Skinner of Talkin’ Giants, Jones converted just one deep pass. Here is his full summary:
“Daniel Jones went 15/22 with an interception today. Missed 5 throws 20+ yards down the field with one 20+ yarder completed to Malik Nabers.” -Bobby Skinner
Skinner highlighted a few notable deep throws on his social media page. One of the throws linked here was to WR Wan’Dale Robinson. Despite clearing the secondary by 15 yards, Jones still ended up missing a wide open pass down the field to Robinson.
Contract Clause
As mentioned above, Jones was awarded a lucrative contract at the end of the 2022 season. This resulted in a large portion of the Giants’ salary cap being devoted towards this contract. Last season was not an encouraging sign that this was a good decision.
Luckily, Schoen did put one clause in the contract to protect the Giants in case Jones declined significantly. This clause was a club opt-out at the end of the 2024 season. It would make the last two years of this lucrative contract null and void. In other words, if Jones continues to regress, the Giants have the option to cut ties with him at the end of the season.
New York Giants Moving Forward
If there is one bright spot to the Daniel Jones report today, it is the early progress from rookie WR Malik Nabers. Jones’ only completed deep pass today went to Nabers, and Nabers looked impressive on this play. Perhaps he can help Jones convert on more opportunities if he lives up to the hype.
