The Dallas Cowboys are giving Micah Parsons his 5th Year Option Under the Category of Defensive End.
News broke late Tuesday that Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons received his 5th-year option. Giving Parsons the choice was not news, as everyone expected that to happen, but it was the category he was extended under.
Micah Parsons was extended as a defensive end instead of a linebacker, which saved the Dallas Cowboys $2.7 million.
Cowboys are placing the fifth-year option on Micah Parsons as a defensive end, not linebacker, two people close to the situation said. The salary difference is about $2.7 million. https://t.co/Eppi8BSjQd

According to Over the Cap, any linebacker with over one Pro Bowl would make about $24 million. Parsons, listed at defensive end (with over one Pro Bowl), is set to make $21.3 million. This portion of his contract will kick in after this next season.

Dallas Cowboys Need to Pay Micah
An extension is imminent with star defender Micah Parsons, regardless of what he is listed as. Some say it does not matter what category he is in now but how much it will help him later.
Whenever that happens, Micah is thought to earn “Nick Bosa Money” with his extension from the Dallas Cowboys.

“The San Francisco 49ers and star pass-rusher Nick Bosa have agreed to a five-year, $170 million contract extension that includes $122.5 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, per multiple reports.” According to Fox Sports.
On the other hand, the highest-paid linebacker is Roquan Smith of the Baltimore Ravens. His extension was five years and $100 million.
Even if Micah loses money on the front end of this fifth-year option, it will cash in heavily in the long run.
Another note: Dallas did not extend CeeDee Lamb last season, which will hurt them significantly. Cowboys fans’ hopes are high that this does not happen for Micah Parsons.
Micah Parsons – Not a Linebacker or a Defensive End
This category dispute raises the question of adding a category to the contract situation. The NFL should finally add “Edge” to its many positions of the contract categories.
🤦🏻♂️ He’s an edge rusher. It’s about time we get with the times and fix the designations. A few guys are hybrids but most are easy. https://t.co/WC8EyLscWx

TJ Watt, Josh Allen, Brian Burns, and Micah Parsons may be able to make more money if they are listed in a new category that allows the NFL to designate its positions for these impactful players.
Five of the top seven defensive NFL contracts are listed for the Edge position. Yet, nothing states “Edge” from the 2020 NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The Dallas Cowboys might add Micah to that list very soon.
These star players are losing money. Language may change before the next CBA.
