Thompson entered the transfer portal in late December. He played for the FAU Owls last season but suffered a torn ACL after only three games. The Owls finished the season 4-8 while going 1-2 in Thompson’s games.
Casey Thompson: Enters Seventh College Season
Thompson, a former four-star recruit per On3 Sports, landed with the Texas Longhorns in 2018. He tossed just 20 passes through his first three seasons, playing behind longtime starter Sam Ehlinger. Thompson took over for Ehlinger in 2020, a year after the Longhorns won the Alamo Bowl and posted a 7-3 record. The six-foot-one signal-caller threw for 2,113 yards and 24 scores against nine picks in 12 games. He also ran for 155 yards and four scores. Thompson is the only player in Texas football history with three games of five or more touchdowns, per OUInsider on Twitter (also on X).
Thompson shined in his 2021 start against Oklahoma football, going 20 of 34 for 388 yards and five scores. However, OU backup quarterback Caleb Williams came in for a struggling Spencer Rattler, winning the game for the Sooners, 55-48.
Thompson entered the transfer portal in the offseason, leaving Texas for the Nebraska Cornhuskers under Scott Frost. He took a step backward statistically, throwing just 17 touchdowns against ten picks. He again faced the Sooners, going 14-of-20 for 129 yards and one score in a loss. Thompson entered the transfer portal again, heading to the FAU Owls of the American Athletics Conference. Thompson played just three games before suffering a season-ending ACL injury. He finished the 2023 campaign with 509 passing yards, five touchdowns, and five picks. He has 52 passing touchdowns, 10 rushing touchdowns, and 24 interceptions in his six-year college career.
Oklahoma Football: Thompson to Compete with Jack Arnold
The Oklahoma Sooners will likely replace former quarterback Dillon Gabriel with Jackson Arnold. Gabriel shinned for Oklahoma football this season, throwing for 3,660 yards and 30 touchdowns against six picks. However, he will play for the Oregon Ducks next fall. Meanwhile, Arnold, a former five-star prospect, started in the Alamo Bowl against the Arizona Wildcats with Gabriel out. He showed flashes of brilliance but finished with two touchdowns and three picks with 361 passing yards.
