On Friday, the Miami Dolphins gave into Tua Tagovailoa’s contract demands before the 2024 regular season. The No. 5 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft had not practiced much in training camp as he was waiting for a deal to be finalized with the Dolphins.
Tua Tagovailoa was a DNP on Thursday
According to Sports Illustrated, Tua’s hold-in changed on Thursday when he chose not to participate with the team:
The Tua Tagovailoa hold-in continued Thursday, but unlike Wednesday’s first practice, in which the fifth-year quarterback participated only in limited fashion, he was purely a spectator on the sidelines on Day Two.
At the Miami Dolphins Baptist Health Training Complex, Tagovailoa came out in an orange hoodie without a helmet and hands in his pockets as he watched the three backup quarterbacks warm up. He then watched the trio take all of the snaps in the drills while he held a football in his valuable left hand and monitored play calls on a radio in his right.
After Thursday’s practice, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel didn’t seem too concerned about Tua missing practice. For good reason, the negotiations between Tua and the Dolphins were almost complete.
The Miami Dolphins are set to give Tua $212.4 million
According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, Tua is set to sign a four-year contract extension worth $212.4 million, of which $167 million is guaranteed. His base salary of 53.1 million makes Tua the third highest-paid quarterback in the league per ear, behind Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence.

Quarterback salaries go up in 2024
The quarterback market went up significantly with the salary cap increase this offseason. Tua was expected to earn around the $50-55 million range after Trevor Lawrence signed his $55 million per year contract extension. Dak Prescott could make $60 million per year on his next contract.
$53.1 million is a lot of money for a quarterback who has never won a playoff game and scored just seven points against the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs last season.
But was the alternative for the Dolphins if they didn’t extend Tua?
