Despite success at every level of football, former Oklahoma football legend and current Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray still has his doubters. Murray, the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft, won Rookie of the Year, tossing 20 touchdowns in his first season with the Cardinals. The former Heisman Trophy winner continued to improve, earning two Pro Bowl nods over the next two seasons. He accounted for 74 touchdowns while leading the Red Birds to the playoffs in 2021, just four years after the franchise won only three games.
However, when new contract negotiations began, fans and ownership alike questioned Murray’s work ethic and ability to be a long-term answer for a franchise. Owner Michael Bidwill even put a clause in his contract to watch a certain amount of film per week (it has since been removed). On Friday, former Cardinals teammate and longtime Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy came to Murray’s defense.
Former Longhorn Colt McCoy gave his thoughts on former Sooner Kyler Murray on The Pat McAfee Show:
“I was around Kyler for two full seasons, almost three. I love Kyler. I don’t think people understand how intelligent he is. He knows the game really well. Plays it off feel… pic.twitter.com/66Bvt47Obr

Former Arizona Cardinals Teammate Colt McCoy Backs Kyler Murray
McCoy joined The Pat McAfee Show and didn’t mince words when talking about his former teammate. McCoy said, “I was around Kyler for two full seasons, almost three. I love Kyler. I don’t think people understand how intelligent he is. He knows the game really well. Plays it off feel better than anybody I’ve ever been around.”
McCoy played behind Kyler Murray from 2021 to 2022, starting six games. The longtime NFL veteran struggled, throwing just four touchdowns to four interceptions. McCoy played at rival Texas in college, earning All-American honors twice and leading the Longhorns to the BCS Championship in 2009.
“Kyler is a good person. He’s super sweet, coming over to my house and playing with my kids. He plays whiffle ball with my son out in the front yard.”
Former Oklahoma Football Elite QB Kyler Murray: Solid Return in 2023
Murray missed most of this season rehabbing from a torn ACL but returned in the Cardinals’ Week 10 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Murray led Arizona to their second win of the season, beating the NFC South club 25-23. The Sooners legend enters the season finale with 1,537 yards passing, nine touchdowns, and five picks. He has also run the ball 39 times for 211 yards and three scores.
