Although they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, the Buffalo Bills are slated to enter the upcoming season as one of the favorites to compete for the Super Bowl. For that to happen, the team may have to trade Stefon Diggs away.
Despite a slump during at some point last season, the Bills finished the regular strong with an 11-6 record, placing them first in the AFC East division. With Josh Allen leading the way, Buffalo dismantled the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild card round.
Unfortunately, Buffalo came up short against the Chiefs with a score of 27-24 after Tyler Bass’ attempt to tie the game didn’t work out. This is the third consecutive year the Bills lost in the divisional round, and the tjhird time in four seasons the was eliminated by Kansas City in the playoffs.
At this point in time, Buffalo needs to make a move during the offseason to have a chance to truly contend in the playoffs. Along with the upcoming draft, the team will have to get new players while trading those that didn’t pan out in the past few seasons.
Why The Buffalo Bills Have to Trade Stefon Diggs This Offseason
This past season, Diggs hasn’t been the player he used to be. Along with a dip in performance, keeping the wide receiver will be detrimental Bills’ effort to keep their roster within the salary cap. Aaron Schatz explains more in his article for ESPN:
“The question is what the Bills can get for Diggs. He’s probably not going to garner a first-round pick. Teams know his age and that he’s in decline. There has never been a receiver who went from over 1,400 yards to under 1,200 yards and back to over 1,400 yards at age 30 or older. The closest was Reggie Wayne in 2010-2012, who went 1,355 to 960 to 1,355 again at the age of 34.
The Bills would have to trade Diggs after June 1 or else he will cost them more on the salary cap. A post-June 1 trade would save them $19 million on the salary cap with $8.8 million in dead money,” Schatz wrote.
As it stands, there’s a lot more to lose if the Bills chose to keep Diggs for next season. The decline in performance, an advance in age, and a need to keep the roster within the salary cap are factors that will lead Buffalo to trade the wide receiver away.
It remains to be seen what move will the Bills make in the coming months regarding Diggs, a player awarded with a $96 million contract during his time with the team. What’s certain is that the front office will do what it can to make the most of Allen’s prime in Buffalo.
