Despite the spring window of the transfer portal coming to a halt, the Colorado Buffaloes and coach Deion Sanders remain in the spotlight, continuing to make waves in the football world. Following a significant roster overhaul last month, which saw the departure of numerous players to the transfer portal and the addition of highly productive players for this upcoming fall, Sanders and his team remain in the limelight due to a recent Twitter exchange.
On Tuesday, former Buffs cornerback and current Austin Peay playmaker Xavier Smith took shots at coach Sanders through an interview with the Athletic, calling the frontman out for showing little compassion to those leaving the program last offseason. Colorado hired Sanders away from Jackson State after the former Pac-12 squad posted a brutal 1-11 record in 2022. However, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, the son of Deion Sanders, clapped back, calling Smith “mid at best” and disregarding his claims. On Wednesday, coach Prime backed his son via Twitter after the younger Sanders received much criticism for his behavior.
Coach Deion Sanders: Supporting Shedeur Sanders
Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders demonstrated his loyalty and intrepidity on Tuesday, standing up for his father, head coach Deion Sanders, against his former teammate’s accusations from the 2022 offseason that his father was ‘destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves.’
“Ion even remembers him, tbh. Bro had to be very mid at best,” said the younger Sanders on his official Twitter page, gaining north of 15 million views in less than 24 hours. Social media quickly went after Sanders for his lack of leadership and decision-making, with many comparing him to former South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Rattler fell in last month’s NFL draft for personality traits displayed on the Netflix show “QB1” during his High School days in Arizona.
Coach Prime did not seem fazed by the ordeal when pressed about his son’s actions on Twitter (also known as X), saying, “He will be a top 5 pick. Where yo son going? Lololol, I got time today. Lololol.”

Sheduer Sanders, despite taking a ludicrous 52 sacks in 2023, threw for 3,230 yards, 27 touchdowns, and three picks last year. Colorado posted a 4-8 record, losing eight of its previous nine games. Many early mocks have Sanders as an early first-round pick, while some omit him from the top 32.
Colorado Football: Heading Into Second Year of Coach Prime Era
The Colorado Buffaloes will look to improve on last season’s 4-8 record as they return to the Big 12. Colorado, under coach Sanders, continues to redefine the transfer portal era. Last season, an unprecedented 53 players left the Buffaloes football program, with 86 new players heading to Boulder, Colorado. Meanwhile, 34 transfers are incoming for the 2024 season, while another 39 have darted for the portal.
Colorado will return the dynamic passing duo of quarterback Shedeur Sanders and wideout/corner Travis Hunter. Sanders posted an elite 151.7 quarterback rating while completing 70% of his passes. Hunter caught 57 passes for 721 yards and five scores. Additionally, Hunter had 30 tackles, two TFLs, and three sacks across nine games.
