Head Coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado football program are going through a major roster turnover heading into their annual spring game on Saturday. The Buffaloes roster continues to take shape as the spring window of the transfer portal has seen more than ten players leave the program. Conversely, Sanders and his staff have inked a wave of highly productive players, including a pair of edge rushers. Despite the non-stop moving parts at Colorado, Sanders took time out of his day on Wednesday to support a quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft.
Sanders, an NFL Hall of Famer turned college football frontman, remains one of the most vocal head coaches in the sport, whether on social media or in interviews. On Wednesday, the former standout corner spoke his mind via Twitter (also known as X), sharing a glowing review of Michael Penix Jr., formerly of the Washington Huskies and a fringe top-five quarterback prospect in the upcoming league draft.
Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders: Shows Support for Michael Penix Jr.
It’s rare for a player to receive a resounding endorsement from a legendary figure in the NFL. Yet, former Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr. experienced that on Wednesday, with NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders lending his support through Twitter.
I can't stand the way the main stream media and draft experts have look over, look by & looked pass MICHAEL PENIX JR. This is ridiculous. This young man had a GREAT year and 1 average game vs the #1 defense in college football. SOMEBODY stand up & tell the Truth plz. #CoachPrime

“I can’t stand the way the main stream media and draft experts have look over, look by & looked pass MICHAEL PENIX JR. This is ridiculous. This young man had a GREAT year and 1 average game vs the #1 defense in college football. SOMEBODY stand up & tell the Truth plz,” said Coach Prime on his Twitter account on Wednesday.
Penix Jr. remains one of the top quarterback prospects in this month’s NFL draft, yet has fallen out of favor with some of his peers during the draft process. North Carolina’s Drake Maye, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels enter this week with rumors and reports circulating that they could go as high as the second overall pick to the Washington Commanders. At the same time, many pundits believe Penix is more suited for the backend of the first round.
Michael Penix Jr: Five-Year College Career
Alongside Oregon’s Bo Nix and LSU’s Jayden Daniels, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. is one of the oldest quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL draft. Penix started his college career with the Indiana Hoosiers, where he spent four seasons. He threw just 34 passes as a true freshman in 2018 before suffering a season-ending ACL tear. Penix’s Indiana tenure was overshadowed by injuries, with him failing to play more than seven games in any of his four seasons. He threw for 4,197 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 19 picks across 21 games.
Penix Jr. transferred to the Washington Huskies for the 2022 season. He dominated in the Pac-12, throwing for 4,641 yards and 31 touchdowns against eight picks during his inaugural season with the Huskies. He took a step forward last season, throwing for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while leading UW to the College Football Playoff. After beating the Texas Longhorns in the semifinals, the Huskies and Penix Jr. fell to the Michigan Wolverines in the title game.
