The Colorado football program continues to make headlines, specifically regarding the revolving door concerning their roster. Before last weekend’s spring game, the Buffaloes lost an unprecedented amount of players through the spring window of the transfer portal while equally snagging elite talent to bolster their depth in the trenches. Meanwhile, a transfer from the beginning of the Coach Prime era, Xavier Smith, recently spoke to The Athletic’s Max Olson, criticizing how Deion Sanders handles player departure from Boulder, Colorado.
Smith took aim at the elder Sanders for “destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves” while showing little to no compassion for players planning to enter the portal. However, with Smith’s comments making their rounds on social media, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders backed his father while simultaneously downplaying the now Austin Peay cornerback’s remarks.
Colorado Football QB Shedeur Sanders: Calls Out Xavier Smith
The Colorado Buffaloes remain in the spotlight regarding college football. On Tuesday, comments from a former Buffaloes corner, Xavier Smith, went viral for sharing his transfer experience during the first season under Deion Sanders’ tutelage.
Ion even remember him tbh. Bro had to be very mid at best. https://t.co/qwK48Ys0Et

“I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me,” said Smith.
Late last offseason, other players who entered the transfer portal upon the arrival of the former Jackson State frontman criticized Sanders. According to Bleacher Report, a total of 53 scholarship players transferred out of Colorado by the end of last spring
Smith continued, “He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves. The way he did it, it could’ve been done with a little more compassion.”
Coach Sanders’ son, starting Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, took to Twitter to respond to Smith’s comments. He did not mince words when discrediting his former teammates’ remarks.
“Ion even remembers him, tbh. Bro had to be very mid at best,” said the younger Sanders. Smith spent the 2022 campaign with Colorado football but did not play while using his redshirt season. Smith transferred to Austin Peay, earning 2023 Phil Steele FCS Fourth Team Freshman All-America honors.
Colorado Buffaloes: Spring Window Transfer Portal Moves
The Colorado football program experienced more turnover than most during the spring window of the transfer portal. Over ten players, including former five-star corner Cormani McClain, left Colorado in early April. Additionally, the freshman took shots at coach Sanders and the program’s culture on his way out.
Meanwhile, Colorado has also grabbed a few high-end players through the portal for next fall. Headlining the group is the pass-rushing duo of Dayon Hayes and Rayyan Buell. Hayes had 10.5 TFLs and four sacks with the Pittsburgh Panthers last season, while Buell posted 12.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks with the Ohio Bobcats.
