Saturday’s win over the Towson Tigers was just what the West Virginia Mountaineers needed. It didn’t take long for WVU to set the tone after the opening kickoff. West Virginia had a big first half, commanding the lead as they retreated into the locker room, 45-7. The second half saw a lot of younger players earn playing time, and the Mountaineers were able to add three more touchdowns the bring the final score to 65-7.
West Virginia Hit the Ground Running

West Virginia came in with an offensive game plan that showcased their strength in running the football. The Mountaineers averaged 7.0 yards per carry, giving Tony Mathis Jr. the first three plays of the game. On those carries he was able to tally 43 yards to move WVU across midfield. Mathis Jr. was a key component in the run game carrying the ball 17 times for 104 yards and adding two touchdowns to the scoreboard. Another standout was freshman running back CJ Donaldson as he continued a hot start to his college career. Donaldson had another big game as he averaged 11.2 yards per carry on his way to 101 yards and 3 touchdowns.
WVU Quarterbacks on Display
During the game, the Mountaineers showed off their arm talent at the quarterback position. Starter J.T. Daniels lead the way with 174 yards and a touchdown in a little under two quarters of action. All four quarterbacks for WVU saw playing time during the game and were able to lead the team on touchdown drives. Highly touted freshman, Nicco Marchiol made an excellent pass in the fourth quarter to find Preston Fox for a touchdown. After the game, head coach Neal Brown had some positive comments on Marchiol’s performance so far in Morgantown.
Looking Ahead for West Virginia
It will be a short trip for West Virginia as they prepare for a mid-week game against Virginia Tech. The Black Diamond Trophy will be up for grabs once again in Blacksburg this Thursday, Sept. 22nd. West Virginia leads the all-time series 29-23, but Virginia Tech will be looking for revenge after last year’s loss. With no contest scheduled against one another in the near future, West Virginia will not want to relinquish the trophy just yet.
