If there was Mulligan in the NFL, the Denver Broncos likely would have used it to take back the enormous mistake of trading for/signing Russell Wilson to a huge contract in 2022. Wilson’s stint with the Broncos is full of bitter memories for the franchise, but at least it is about to end soon, with Denver announcing on Monday that it will be releasing the quarterback this March.
Mark Schlereth Did Not Hold Back In His Opinion Of Russell Wilson’s Time With The Denver Broncos
A lot has been said about how big of a disaster Wilson’s stint has been with the Broncos. Among those who’ve voiced out a strong opinion on it is no other than former Broncos guard and three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth.
Via Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette:
Ex-#Broncos G Mark Schlereth on Russell Wilson tenure: “Colossal disappointment. I had high expectations going into it and I was sorely disappointed in the results. … And under Payton, It became apparent the lack of Wilson’s ability to throw to guys open and anticipate throws”
But even with the Denver Broncos and Wilson parting ways, the team will still be reminded for a long time of their ill-fated marriage with the QB. For one, Wilson’s looming departure doesn’t mean that the Broncos will no longer feel his negative impact on the franchise because they are about to incur dizzying dead cap hits. Wilson has a dead cap hit of $85 million for the 2024 NFL season if he’s released before June 1 and $40.4 million in 2024 and $49.5 million in 2025 if he’s designated as a Post-June 1 cut.
